Expanding it further, Kelly is 3-8 against opponents ranked in the top 10 at Notre Dame. Five of the eight losses were by 14 points or more

Kelly is right about the opponents. Notre Dame has played seven top-five opponents since Kelly took over, and the Irish were ranked in the top five in five of those games.

Not hitting the panic button, because I never expected LSU to beat Tennessee, but genuinely curious if this concerns anyone else? Not so much the fact that he loses against top 10 teams, those games are hard to win. But he struggles to keep those games close, even when Norte Dame was also considered a top team.

The reason I bring this up, is because we have looked unprepared to start the game against 4 different opponents now, and we saw yesterday the result when that happens against an actually good team.

I don’t care what happened at Notre Dame. This is a much different job.

It’s year 1, losing to top 10 teams should be more or less expected. Newsflash: we’re going to lose to Alabama as well.

If we’re sitting here at the end of year 3 and are like 1-8 against Top Ten teams then you might have something.

That’s why I said I never expected us to beat Tennessee. Do you think it’s concerning that we have gotten down double digits early to every decent team we’ve played so far?

What you’re seeing is teams are coming in with good game plans and their players are executing them well, then we’re usually able to adjust.

Obviously you don’t want to be down double digits every week but I think it’s been a little bit of bad luck as much as anything else.

Tell me realistically how this team gets to 7 wins.

Florida, UAB, Texas A&M and Arky are all winnable games

Florida, Ole Miss, Arky, and A&M are all beatable. Split those 4 and you’re at 6, handle your business against UAB and you’re 7-5 and in a bowl against like Syracuse or something which is also very winnable. 8-5 year 1 is more than acceptable.

That’s my point. Coming into the game with a good game plan is usually very important when it comes to winning and competing in games. The fact that our opponents are constantly come in with better game plans than us is concerning no?

Could be that ND was overrated and should not have been ranked that high.

He didn’t have elite skill position talent which is what he referenced when he took LSU job

Some concerns with Brian Kelly from yesterday:

1) The opening kickoff was a cluster. TV showed the coaches frantic about something on the field and the announcers mentioned that Bech switched at the last second. How do you go into the opening kickoff and not be ready???

2) The horrible 4th down calls. 4th and 10 with this team? All 3 were bad. Also the 3rd and 1 that led to the 4th and 1 looked like a busted play.

3) Kelly seemed out of sorts at times, tried to get Boutte back onto the field at the last second for a play in the 4th. Seemed to be involved in substitutions a few times.

What was Saban’s record against “top teams” prior to coming to LSU? Les Miles? What was both of their records their first year at LSU? It doesn’t matter! The SEC is different. And building a winning culture takes time.

Someone needs to post that Josh Pate video after the FSU loss, again.

Saban was the first coach to beat Ohio state, Michigan, and Penn state in the same season when he was at Michigan state.

Probably Ole Miss too. We happen to play 3 of the top 4 teams in the SEC. 8-4 was my hope and it’s still attainable.

I’ve always felt ND was overrated and that their image gave them an edge.

You’re right, let’s keep getting down by 2+ scores early every game. Surely it will turn out well most of the time. If you don’t see that as a problem, idk what to tell you.

He never had the talent he will have in years to come so stat a little misleading. Dude can coach even though yesterday looked like we tried to change the outcome early instead of taking what was there.

This. If LSU is still struggling like this in 2025 then we have a serious, albeit expensive, problem.
