These films seem to be a thing of the past. I’m not talking about WW1 and WW2 movies, I’m talking about epics that cover older history than that

Last of the Mohicans
Braveheart
Gladiator
Kingdom of Heaven
Patriot

I haven’t seen The Northman yet, so correct me if that belongs in this category, but history is so ripe with stories of war it frustrates me Hollywood stays away from this now. Im not talking about limited series either, I’m talking big budget, marketed movies, epic battles with historical settings.

Conquistadors conquest of the Aztecs
Napoleon
Big budget Civil War film with battles, it’s been since Gettysburg in what 1993?
Hannibal invading Rome
Mongols
War of 1812

frick superhero movies and sequels, pour some money into this shite. I need more than rewatching movies made more than 17 years ago.

I would really like Netflix to dedicate $$ to create a Greek mythology universe. So many great stories and they all intertwine. As long as they stay “true” to the myths, I’d really be excited for that.

But to your point of true historical epics, can we get a legit Napoleon production?? Series or movie, don’t care. History is stranger than fiction.

We're getting Napoleon, directed by Ridley Scott and staring
Joanquin Phoenix...but it's going to be released on Apple TV+ it seems.

Cool. Didn’t know that. Hopefully he doesn’t take liberties with the story. I’ll watch it either way.

John Carter would fall into this category.

Big risk / Big reward.

Easier to risk in places with an established audience......comics...

Was the director's cut of this the last great one? And it is still underrated.

I saw The Northman, but wouldn't really slot it in with the other films you mentioned. I didn't see The Woman King, but would that be the most recent attempt?

Lawrence Of Arabia is my favorite movie, but maybe not enough people have the patience to sit through and appreciate an event like that these days, so it isn't worth the expense to producers.

The critical and commercial failure of Alexander may have also helped kill the genre, even though I think Stone's subsequent cuts fleshed out a good film.

This did seem like the last one. The profit margin for that wasn't worth the trouble.

But, yeah, you'll never get Lawrence of Arabia again. Shot on location.

Target Hollywood audience knows more about the history of Batman than the history of Napoleon.

Why spend $300m to make a movie only the domestic audience is interested in and at best will break even when you can spend the same amount to make a comic book film the Asian audience will eat up and net $1b ?

I’m guessing it’s bc many people prefer a series over a movie if the story is good. I’d prefer watch a series like The Last Kingdom over a 2.5 hour movie if we are talking fictionalized version of history.

I think it has to do with them being uber expensive and losing money. Alexander, troy, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood, King Arthur, even Master and Commander. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a string of massive budget epics fail to meet their box office expectations. Since then, Ridley has tried again with Exodus: Gods and Kings. Flop. We've had post 300 stuff like Immortals. Flop. We got another king Arthur movie. Flop. A studio gave Aronofsky a huge budget for a weirdo biblical epic in Noah. Flop.

Some of these movies were good, and some weren't, but epics seem to be considered a risky gamble that have garbage odds of paying off.

That would be awesome. I love Greek and Roman mythology.

Let HBO and the makers of Game of Thrones and/or House of the Dragon do it. With how much rape and incest is in ancient mythology, they would certainly be the ones to know how to make it “cool” on screen

10 year old GLT would have lost his mind for this. Egypt too
