One Day in London

I’ll be in London for one full day with an old friend while in transit. We are planning to do Churchill’s War Rooms, but have heard from multiple people that the rest of the Imperial War Museums are kinda underwhelming.
Can anyone recommend a few good 1-3 hour things to do that are easily accessible by tube? We are both into history, government, that sort of thing. We’re nerds. Staying by near St. Pancras station if that makes a difference.
Appreciate any tips or thoughts.

You can walk from one to the other by crossing Tower Bridge. Centuries of history along with some great views.

You can spend a pretty great day just walking around Whitehall lane, the Mall, Birdcage Walk, parliament, Duck into Westminster abbey, etc…
Also May really enjoy the British Museum. It’s free and filled with all the stuff they saved (or pilfered) from the ancient world.

I'd go to Westminster Abbey, Westminster (Parliament) for certain. Then, if time allowed, I'd go straight north to Banqueting House and see the Reubens ceiling and see where King Charles I was hung, then through Trafalgar square where you could very briefly pop into the National Gallery. That is all on a steady line to Pancras and there will be more than a few pubs along the way. The British Musuem is also that direction but not really worth it if you have 3 hours

Id start at Tower Of London for London history, imo.
Given that, London is spread out and while the tube is good its not great IMO. Well depending on what you want to do. Like any big city the traffic is terrible around the monuments so taxis/ ubers for more then a mile are hard.
What I'm trying to say is that depending on your schedule, don't over plan. I'd plan 2 maybe 3 things that are fairly close together. Especially if you enjoy it, its one thing to pop in and see something for 15 mins and be done, but if you want to see the tower of london well you need a couple hours for example.

Download the CityMapper app on your phone. It's the very best app for getting around London - will show you all walking,tube,bus routes. FYI the bus is super easy.
Make sure you have touchless pay set up on your phone or a credit card that works for touchless pay. It's how you use the tubes and the bus. Do not buy an Oyster Card as you don't need it. Use your touchless pay to access the tube and the buses.

The Churchill War Rooms should be at the top of your list. Parliament and Westminster Abbey are right near there. Those places will occupy a large part of the day.
If time permits I would go next to St Paul’s and the Tower of London.
You said you are interested in history and government. One thing I enjoyed was the Legal London tour. If you are just there for one day you won’t have time for this but we did our own Legal London tour that included the four major Inns of Court. We saw the beautiful courthouse on the Strand and sat in on a murder trial in Old Bailey. We went in the Supreme Court which is next to the Churchill war rooms and sat in on a court session there. We hit Parliament at the right time and heard Prime Minister Cameron give a speech to the House of Commons.
But you can’t do all that in one day. Maybe another time.

One day will be tough. I second War Rooms, stay the hell away from the British Museum, etc.
I did like just walking around to fill time, though. I crossed seven bridges (IIRC) in one day, eating a Sainsbury sandwich lunch at this bus stop and that.
The National Army Museum wasn't bad at all, if it's the one I am pretty sure I visited. It's just not overwhelming like the Parisian Musee de Armee is (it took me five or six hours to get through that, but less than 90 minutes through the Brit version.)
My coin flip is that when it comes to things British, I'd just default to Navy history. Of course see changing of the guard, and visit Trafalgar square before that statue gets torn down too.

Research the best guided bus tour, and hop on at the earliest time. It will cover more ground in a couple of hours than you could dream of doing on your own.
You'll at least get a look at all the major tourist sites, with some guide info along the way. And you will have time afterward to go hit an individual place or two (Westminster Abbey, Tower of London) that is of most interest.
I try to start my new city visits with a bus tour. London, Paris, NYC, Chicago (Architecture Center has great boat and bus tours). Every one was well worth it. There are some shitty bus tours, but there's usually at least one legit one that TripAdvisor can help identify.

Don't overdo it, and don't spend the whole time in a f'ing museum. Pick one - Churchill War Room, Natural History Museum, Buckingham Palace, British Museum, Tower of London/London Bridge, etc. and enjoy it for a few hours.
Spend a few hours roaming through Piccadilly Circus and Harrod's. Enjoy nice meal and pints at a great pub.
