Governor Sarah got her School Choice bill - $7,500 per student vouchers for private.

And a minimum starting teacher salary of $50,000/year.
Universal school choice. Money goes with the student rather than to the public school district. $7,500 per student per year to use as private school tuition, or for homeschooling.
It will be interesting to see how this affects education in this state. The private schools need to start planning for expansion.
Also bans CRT in public schools.

Yeah, its kind of amazing, honestly.
Of course the teacher's unions hate it.
Passed both houses of the legislature. All she has to do is sign it.

This will be a blueprint for freedom loving parents and states.

Then others will pop up and take their place.
There is a market solution to almost everything, esp education, if not curtailed by the state.

Private schools are cheap in Arkansas. $7500/year? That’s less than I paid for daycare in NC

Since the Arkansas Democratic Party’s collapse in the last two decades, a decent GOP governor can pass almost anything.
If there are two functioning parties, the governor of Arkansas is actually pretty weak constitutionally, unless they can effectively use the bully pulpit.

Most private schools have enrollment limits due to limited space. Additionally, $7500 doesn’t get you into many private schools.

I’m curious about the mechanics of this. Would the state government supplement local counties or districts that fall short of that number? I know in Louisiana, pay rates vary from parish to parish. I think the means of raising those funds even varies from place to place. Is it similar in Arkansas?

It isn't intended to be a full-tuition replacement. It will relieve some of the burden for those already using private schools. It will probably be a boon to cities like Little Rock where most upper and middle income people already use private schools.
The best private schools like Thaden School in Bentonville already index their tuition to increase affordability. $7,500 would mean the difference between a solidly middle class family being able to send a child to an excellent prep school or not.

I actually googled it and yeah, it appears private schools are pretty cheap in Arkansas.
not an exhaustive list, but pretty good
Apart from the Delta and Little Rock city-proper, most areas have decent public school systems and people of all classes still use them.
NWA has at least 5 or 6 great public school districts and we have several charter schools already (the Waltons are big supporters of education choice)

Private school is just going to start costing $7500 more per student, and the product is going to get shittier. That is what happens anytime the government subsidizes anything.

It makes that monthly payment more of a realistic scenario for a lot of middle class folks though.

Wow that’s great. Is this money diverted from public school funding?

Most Arkansas schools can't afford to pay teachers near this much... Which only means the local millages will have to be jacked up unworldly amounts.
It also still does not fix the root problem of public schools, which is to teach the fundamentals instead of computer learning and all the bullshite "consultant" learning trends.
It still isn't going to fix the problem of basic reading and math in most schools.
It will also destroy what's left of the small rural districts, which will then merge with larger public districts and make those school even worse.
This is great if you live in a metro area and you are captured to your current district, and your kid can now go across town to the better district, but the state is largely rural and small towns, so that doesn't work for them.
The actual cause of the problems will still be exactly the same, and that's a complete lack of discipline from the teachers and administration and a complete lack of teaching basics instead of teaching "trends."
This really won't fix anything, but it will cause lots of chaos among fisyrcis and it will cost the taxpayers far far more.
Her father was an idiot when it came to education and so is she, and this is coming from someone who voted for her.

Exactly. Funny how people who are so against govm't handouts now premise them. This is unsustainable from a financial and school infrastructure standpoint. And now a bunch of really shitty teachers are going to make far more than they deserve for working 8 months a year.

Private school tuition gonna go up by $7,500 then.
That’s how thus is going to work.
Affordability won’t improve neither will choice

Give her time, she will end up like Daddy Huckster, a RINO.
Daddy Huckster has moved his position based on the winds.
Daddy Huckster raised taxes and pardoned more criminals during his tenure than the 5 surrounding state governors COMBINED.
