No Idea Where to Fish for Specks/Reds - help?

Hi all,
Just bought a 23 ft bay boat and ready to go catch some specks/reds this weekend; however, I don’t really know where to go. Any suggestions? I’m aware of general areas like barataria bay, grand isle, etc. but any specific places within the areas? Appreciate your time.

Where do you live? I usually go out of Hopedale. I'm going out Monday but haven't decided where yet. How much experience do you have fishing? LA has a lot of water so once you narrow down a general area we might be able to help.

Mehhhhhh…Have you ever fished Dularge? The rigs there are very easy to find (Mardi Gras, the Pickets, Raccoon point, etc etc) I could go on but you just need to go get your boat wet and fish. Dularge is a hidden gem

People are catching in lake pontchartrain, hopedale, and Delacroix. The lake Robin to two trees area would be worth learning. Just spend a lot of time on the water and maybe check out lafb elite to learn how to look for productive spots/patterns.

I’m out of Destrehan but plan to fish the Venice/grand isle area. And I don’t have much experience fishing from a boat honestly. A lot of trial and error is to come. Appreciate your reply.

You need to purchase a good GPS if you haven't already done so. You should try to find someone with experience to become your fishing buddy, or you should take some guided trips to learn a particular area. March is a time of transition; finding fish on a consistent basis will be difficult. I would start out by learning the Lake Robin, Coquille, Machias, etc area. It is easy to get to, and is quite frankly underfished. Good luck.

I also recommend LAFB elite courses. I think it would save you alot of time of trial and error.

Cocodrie has a bunch of places and water to fish. Wherever you go, if you do not know an area, proceed with caution. I know a bunch of guys starting out that have lost lower units within their first few forays.

Welcome to the boating community. Lots of good advice on here. I would also recommend you make list of recommended equipment to keep on the boat at all times, first aid kit, tool kit, toilet paper, etc.
Bring family, bring friends, just make sure to be safe and enjoy yourself.

go to grand isle, buy live shrimp (bridgeside has)
look on a map, find fifi island.
theres rocks on the north side of that island that line the whole island
fish those with shrimp or vudu under a cork
should get 25 or so trout. its still a about 2 weeks early for a limit

I've always had luck around Beauregard island there too. You can hit Fifi and Beauregard easily. Stay clear of the islands and give yourself some room on the water. There is a land mass that runs between a small island and Beauregard. If you're on step it shouldn't matter but why chance it? Idle in close drop the trolling motor to get closer. It may still be a little early but you should get a few in between those spots. I've caught a few fish on the barges this time of year also heading back towards Fourchon. You can look on the map and see the rock piles in a line that are sunken barges. Those islands and barges are in different directions unfortunately. I love the barges as it starts warming up. Also the rocks at the end of Caminada Pass by bridgeside, and rocks by the state Park. All accessible, all safe routes. Stay off of the Caminada pass rocks a bit they do come out under the water. Swing WIDE if you go around the tip of Elmer's island heading to Fourchon from GI. Beauregard, FiFI, and state park rocks are relatively close to each other.

Last time I went to Campos in my kayak I paddled out across the MrGo and caught fish right there along the channel rocks. I was less than 10 mins from the launch.

I can't help with areas down there, but this is a great mindset to have.
The best thing to do is log your trips and track time of year, tides, moon, water clarity/salinity and bait used. Even more necessary on your successful days. It will get you a long-term pattern that you can use to figure out the best spots at a certain time of year. Trout and redfish stay in the same estuary their whole life, but move to different parts at different times of year.

Like I said, no one wants to talk about Dularge. Go to those rigs and throw a double rigged 1/4oz matrix around them. And bring your net….You will have your limit by 7am easily. Why buy live bait when you can catch everything on plastics?

I've only fished that way once years ago. Is Bayou Dularge boat launch still around?

I'm in Destrehan as well so let me know if you need some help with anything. If you don't have much experience fishing in a boat I would maybe go launch at the spillway and get acclimated with your boat before planning a marsh trip. If you are absolutely going to go this weekend I would probably try the shell beach/ hopedale areas or maybe launch around southshore marina and bounce between lake p or lake borgne. You can also listen to Kevin fords geaux fishing show on Thursdays. He has a few guides that call in and give some good info. Good luck and I hope you get on some if you go.

YEPPP
Just be patient with yourself. I grew up on boats, kayak fished a ton, thought I knew what I was doing. Nothing prepares you for how many individual things you have to remember when just launching a boat much less fishing on it.
You'll get better at it, you'll make your own systems as you go, but at the start it's not going to be a cakewalk and that's ok.
