Just got finished reading this and thought I would share. Very concise and maybe up-to-date considering the indulgent prose favored by websites these days. Includes some very brief snippets of somewhat recent interviews. I've been interested in some of these bands but don't have some encyclopedic memory when it comes to music lore. Anyways, Enjoy......
Rolling Stone

Some bands just aren't meant to last.

I really hate Rolling Stone. Does everything have to be a 50 (or more) artist list? No. 28 is 5th Harmony. Who the hell is that and why should i care they broke up? #3 Live (who cares?); #10 Queensryche (who cares?) And most of these breakups occurred when the band had already run it's course and was not making good music; the breakup was logical and good for the individual artist.

The article is supposed to be about ugly breakups, not the biggest bands that have broken up.

It's easy to say the Beatles and I'm fine with that at #1, but they had basically stopped touring a few years before their official breakup.

and I think if circumstances in the world were different, they would've reunited in some form.

the Smiths are all still alive and that reunion is NEVER happening.. probably same with Talking Heads (minus their R&R HOF performance which was really awkward)

Who cares then? And CSN&Y break up in 2015 for the second time was ugly? No, it was irrelevant and inconsequential as are most of these.

I did not know the part about Sonic Youth. A shame.

The one that still pisses me off is The Police. Sting screwed that up, but I don't blame anyone for wanting to be a solo artist.

Jane's Addiction broke up just when they finally broke out into superstardom. That was quite the shocking moment, because they were revolutionizing the music scene.

GNR have to be up there as well. They were the biggest band in the world when they split.

The Beatles seem to fit this list; however, they had released quite a few records before they finally split. What's stunning is that they did so in only 10 years. Tool laughs at their work ethic But yeah, The Beatles are probably this biggest break up of them all

That very first Eagles breakup was pretty bitter.

Bernie Leadon hated Glen Frey, Randy Meisner hated Frey, Frey hated everyone, Henley hated Frey.

Does that count since they reunited several years later?

Yep. Beatles.

A reunion never happened. I wonder if John doesn’t get shot if they would have done one in the 90’s?

After seeing the $$$ the Eagles were getting, it has to turn their heads???

Distant second is Oasis I think. Those guys are brothers and still won’t play together. Probably couldn’t finish splitting a 6-pack before punches got thrown.

This article left out great bands and included not so popular bands.

Chicago break up with Peter Cetera back in 1985-86. Cannot remember where I read an article that stated that a couple of band members were jealous of Cetera b/c all the attention was directed to him. Plus he was already romanticizing with a solo career and David Foster, being a musical genius that he is, gave him his blessing. They started collaborating and Peter became very successful up until the mid 90's when his career started to decline.

Wham! with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. At their height of their careers in 1986, they decided to call it quits mainly b/c George wanted a solo career and Andrew wanted to be an auto race professional driver. Both accomplished their wishes, except that George obviously had a more successful career. In an interview, someone asked George why split the band in its peak, and he responded by saying that the image of Wham! was to represent youth and teen joy and he just could not continue to write such teen love songs as they were getting older in heading into their mid 20's.

Survivor with Dave Bickler, not sure of the circumstances for the split up but getting Jimi Jamison was a blessing since the band did better with him. Plus IMO Jimi was a better singer.

Toto and Bobby Kimball. Not sure what happened there but he was an asset to the band. The thing was that almost all members of the band were really good singers so they could afford to lose him.

KISS and Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. In the mid 80's Peter and Ace started drinking too much and being careless with their careers according to Gene Simmons. Simmons, being the meticulous entrepeneur that he is, thought that Peter & Ace were not an asset to the band, musically and image wise. Simmons never drank a drop of alcohol stating that even the smell of beer makes him nauseous and that being under the influence of drugs and alcohol interfered with business decisions. I think that he was wise and to me, he is a role model of what a smart business man should be.

Skid Row with Sebastian Bach back in 1995 or so. I think that due to his heavy drinking he started getting obnoxious on stage and his voice was not the same.

Same situation with Warrant and Jani Lane as Skid Row above. Except that his drinking got so bad, that he could not perform anymore and ended up intoxicating himself and dying.

It's a shame they couldn't keep up the quality of their first two albums with later releases.

A reunion will happen at some point.
