I've never been crabbing before but I plan on going next week sometime. Can someone tell me what day(s) would be best to go, when crabs will be running?

you are going to be wasting your time anywhere but within the management area. there are few if any signs to tell you, but when you stop seeing crab traps you know you entered the management area.

there are so many crab traps everywhere else that you only catch 4-5 crabs at the most, because its so heavily overfished everywhere 24/7

they cant use crab traps or fish commercial crab in management areas, so there are plenty of crabs there to be had for the average joe to go catch.

if you never crabbed before, they are not going to be everywhere, they are like fish in a way, look for them to be along shorelines in 4-5 feet of water near areas that the food comes to them, draining out from those bays and oyster beds to the deeper main canals

good luck

Just go when you can. If you launch in pac just go up in grand bayou and just pick a spot. Fist pass let that bait marinate for a bit. Then just move around as they come and go.

Been a few years since I've been out there crabbing, but we used to crush it right around where these two canals come together: LINK

You could go off the road on Island Road. Either on the new piers or even wear some waders and go walk right off the road.

You can set up shop on the piers off of island road. The closer to the weir, the better.

I usually go to Louisiana Sportsman which will give you an NOAA estimation of the tidal movements. I usually go with the tide for Cocodrie since it's in Terrebonne Bay. You want to be either in a rise or fall. Crabs like to feed with water movement.

You can also go to the WMA boat launch and crab the canal.

Crabbing is shite right now, been a lot of grass on the side by the wildlife and fisheries camp. Island road not grassy but still few crabs...

Jesus H, so much has changed. When I was a kid, we'd go on island road to crab. This was back before they had raised it and it used to flood any time the wind blew hard. It looks so much different there now, for the better. Never didn't catch crabs there back in the mid 90's.
