The New Orleans Pelicans are signing forward EJ Liddell to a new three-year, $6.2 million deal, with a team option in the third season, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Liddell was on a two-way contract after suffering a torn ACL in summer league last summer.

Now people can no longer say he's just a JAG.

They must really like what they see in SL practice to do this now.

I have to think they have some plan in place for Kira’s contract at this point.

Probably the plan all along. Wouldn't surprise me if Matkovic will be added in the coming days to round outbthe roster.

Karlo likely stays over one more year I bet.

I think they attempt to sign a vet minimum.

Yeah, he must be killing it in Summer League practices. Griff did tell him if he had came out in Herb’s draft class they would’ve taken him then, that alone tells you they loved what they seen, and signing him now tells you he looks amazing in practice.

Curious to see who we sign with our last 2 2 way spots

I think the move is to sign Matkovic this year especially with JV expiring and Zeller will be gone as well. They need to get their foot underneath them and be ready to be rotational guys by the end of the season so we won't be so inexperienced going into 2024.

I can really see Robbins getting a cheap deal and us keeping Matkovich on 2way/ overseas.

1 of Matkovich/ Robbins will probably get a cheap roster spot. Which means we will have 2 extra 2 way contracts to give.

Kira being traded will put us 1-2 mil over depending on who takes the spot.

Or we roll with 14 players and 3 2way contracts then guarantee one of them before playoffs/ keep a spot open.

We are currently 1.7 over with Kira

If we trade Kira and take back a minimum deal in the 2 million range, we would still be 2 million under the tax, which would give us room to sign Matco or any other vet if we would want.

We gave Liddell the MIL so I guess that doesn’t affect our cap space.

So yes we should now be able to trade Kira and take back 2 vet min/ rookie contracts while staying under.

That number still counts on your total payroll which affects the number towards the tax line.

So we are 1.7 with just Kira. If you add 3mil for Liddell and 2mil for let spots that’s -6.7mil and 10-11mil due

I love this. I think the kid is going to be a solid rotation player this year.

Correct. This little into the tax though I wouldn’t be in a rush to trade Kira unless a good deal materializes.

My next moves would be to fill out the final two two way spots, then go into the season 1.7 above the tax and see if between now and the deadline we come across a deal for lesser salary that we could do, even if we package Jonas and Kira and take back a deal like Stewart and Burks from Detroit

If EJ can be the real backup 4/5 we need this contract is going to be a godsend next year.

Is anyone willing to take on Kira’s contract?

They did sign him to the 2 way after he tore the ACL. Think they realized they got a steal

Liddell is a trust your eyes kinda guy. There’s a place for him in the league

The teams that have cap space and might take a buy low flyer on someone like Kira are currently selling their cap space. They probably won’t look at a move like Kira until Dame and Harden are settled. Why take Kira when you could get something better facilitating a bigger deal?

I bet someone will even if it means we have to send a 2nd but i feel uneasy even flirting with the tax. Even going in small will harshly limit future flexibility because of repeater rules

We definitely wont pay the tax this season unless we are well into the year and look amazing.

Being only 1.7 million into the tax is not that big of a deal. It’s very easy to get under. Every year we have flirted with the tax line and pretty much spent right up to it but have been able to stay under, I don’t see this season being any different.
