aol.com story

I had just pulled up to the marina at Flamingo on Sunday and rangers were running around, more ranger vehicles pulling up, etc. They had just airlifted a guy who got attacked by a croc. Ironically, I had gone to the marina to see the American crocodiles that hang out there, along with the manatees. Never suspected I’d miss a croc attack by a few minutes.

Here are some photos I got of the croc…

…and this is the guy’s little boat. The rangers were just getting it back to the dock to secure it.

Article says 4:55 but I got there around 4:45 and it had already happened. My first video of the big croc was at 4:52.

I had no idea AOL was still alive, albeit it's way different than the last time I used (AIM) or even thought about AOL

For a non OT response

A man swimming in a marina in Everglades National Park was attacked by a crocodile on Sunday — a rare documented attack on a human by a reptile.

The 68-year-old man was pulled underwater, according to witnesses, after his small sailboat flipped in the basin at Flamingo, the park’s southernmost outpost, according to Allyson Gantt, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service.

He was apparently trying to swim the overturned vessel back to the dock when the crocodile closed in around 4:55 p.m, on Sunday, according to a park release. Rangers rushed to treat the man for lacerations on his leg, Gantt said.

Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue then flew the man to Jackson South Medical Center, where he remained as of Monday, WSVN reported.

The incident was originally reported as an alligator bite but Gantt confirmed it was a crocodile.

That's called a pretty shitty day. Your boat flips and then get attacked by a Croc... in America

The crocs have been there for at least hundreds of years. It shouldn't be a huge surprise. Not like he got attacked by a Burmese python.

I can see that’s a croc in the pic but if I’m in Florida and see that I’m assuming it’s a gator

Awesome shots.
Saw about a half dozen manatees but they were mostly too far, and the water was murky so I couldn’t see more than a nose or a back on the close ones.

When you see crocodile and attack in a headline where do you immediately think it happened?

So was he taking out his little sailboat for a swim or was he returning from sailing and decided to take a swim? The boat looks in perfect condition.

“While the park is a safe place to visit, we remind visitors to stay alert and exercise caution, especially around wildlife,” Gantt said in a statement. “Swimming or wading is prohibited in all canals, ponds, freshwater lakes, marked channels and boat basins in Everglades National Park.”

Opps. I've broken that law. In the 1990's. What's the statue of limitations?

Not sure. Maybe he saw the croc, panicked, and tipped over. Maybe the croc offered assistance in tipping the boat over. Maybe he just decided to take a dip in croc-infested waters.

Only one thing is certain…

The crocs have a more pointed, narrowed snout, is that the difference between them and a gator?

Crocs are way more aggressive. They also see you after a while, not later.

Alligator related injuries seem to be more about opportunity than anything most of the time, whereas a croc will actively hunt you.

I was there back in the fall. We stayed in one of the houseboats. There was a resident croc that you could find anytime of the day or night. He seemed very used to people and not aggressive.
