Brand new at Academy.

The first box wasn’t taped closed. When I opened it to see the ammo, it looks like reloads. And a lot of tarnish on it. There were several of these boxes, and all the ammo looked like this. So, I bought a box of green tips- which were in a sealed box - instead. When I got home, this ammo also looked like tarnished reloads. I get that it’s range ammo, but still, I’ve never bought rounds from a retail store that looked like this.

Looks like the brass was annealed and not tumbled before loading, probably skipped a step to save on production costs. Should be fine to shoot and good brass for reloading.

Bottom brass looks like it was shot out of fluted chamber. I'm guessing it's supposed to be new.

I don't really have an issue with the top picture.

The good news is that Academy doesn’t let you return ammo. So it’s not someone buying it, then trading out with other ammo, and then returning.

US made ammo ain't all that, at least the bulk stuff and even the stuff made at government contractor plants. I like a lot of the easter european stuff, even some Wolf Gold products are solid.

Looks like the same legacy stuff I used to get issued in the Army. Brass looks fine, it's annealed not tarnished. Minor dings and scratches mean nothing, if your gun is half way built right it will feed and shoot that stuff without issue. I've ran very much worse looking stuff at the range during rifle quals, the M16 and M4 can straighten out some pretty bent rounds when it chambers them and the brass gets fire formed real good.

Thanks for the responses guys. I reached out to Winchester to see what they have to say about it. I'll update when they respond.

All of this. I worked at an indoor gun range several years back and was constantly checking ammo. They didn't allow green tip 5.56. The steel plate at the back of the range would handle green tip just fine, but the late night customers were constantly shooting the walls and the target carriers.

A LOT of the 5.56 ammo looked exactly like what you have pictured.

It's just annealed military ammo. Winchester owns Lake City, so this stuff is probably off the same stock that goes to the Ukraine and Taliban.

Looking online, at places like Bud's and Ammo Depot, looks like all of the Winchester ammo looks like this. Once again, thanks for the responses, and putting my mind at ease.

Looks like the round will go bang when needed. I have plenty of that OP.

I bought some Indian Hills for defense. I hope the price was worth it.

As mentioned, it's just annealed casing causing the discoloration. However, I have always stayed away from winchester white box ammo. See a lot of bad reviews.

You can shop online and save a few more cents per round buying random bulk deals (which I do). But also the Monarch brass .223 and 9mm sold at Academy have worked flawlessly for me as target ammo and are cheaper than winchester.
