Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2" will not be following its original plan of debuting in theaters on Aug. 16.

Fox News Digital confirmed that Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema opted to delay the release of the second "Horizon" film in "order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max."

The studio had planned an unusually fast back-to-back release for the two "Horizon" films. But after the first chapter collected a modest $23 million in its first two weeks in theaters, the distributor pivoted.

Three hour length is an issue. I think it was good but it had the pacing and number of plot lines you would expect for a twelve episode television series.

Should this have just been a major network miniseries instead?

Most certainly.

The market has changed dramatically since 1990 with few Americans having the desire to sit in the theater through a three-hour Western anymore.

And the age and bladders of the true western fans don’t allow them to sit for three hours straight.

It should have been a limited series on a premium channel or streamer. If Paramount wasn’t flirting with acquisition they could make a play for it to appease the Yellowstoners.

I find it funny some of these directors don’t want intermissions for 3+ hour movies.

Titanic had an intermission for God’s sake.

We can be weird about intermissions.

Last movie I saw in the theaters here having an intermission was The Right Stuff.

Yet in Switzerland I saw Crocodile Dundee and that movie had an intermission.... That movie is 90 minutes long. Just as it was getting good, they turned the movie off for 20 minutes. Long lines at the bathrooms.

Would’ve been cool to see this as a ‘Hatfields & McCoys’ type miniseries instead of a full-fledged TV show with seasons. Love me a good miniseries.

But Costner feels like one of those old school movie stars who is romantic about the big screen, which I get. Interested to see what happens with the other parts down the road.

This isn’t the death of modern westerns, more of a statement on the length Costner made it. Scenery, soundtrack etc are outstanding. But the length was always going to be an issue considering the audience these films cater to.

Should’ve been an HBO limited series, Costner is gonna lose millions of his own dough. Hopefully the final two aren’t cancelled, I don’t know if they already in production or not

No shot 3 and 4 ever get made

I wa super excited about this and still enjoyed part 1 as I’m a sucker for big mountain scenery and westerns but knew this was doomed after going see it

Supposedly part 3 is in post right now. I don't know if he shot enough to actually make a final act though.

They should be recutting 1/2 right now into a 2 part film that actually has a feature film pacing and cut out all that TV bloat. Hell, just cut out wagon train and the widow story altogether. Those stories are shite anyway.

Costner always was a self-indulgent director, but this is another level. Someone get the man a story editor.

They shouldn't spend another dime on a part that's already finished. Just flushing more down the toilet.

The montage at the end of Chapter 1 made it seem like it contained scenes from more than Chapter 2. Some of the characters changed too much for the 25 minutes he can allot for them in one movie

podcast i listened to yesterday actually called this happening.

said sometimes movies get more viewers in theaters for the sequel because people have time to catch up with it between releases.

the way they had this scheduled and the pathetic numbers it did in theaters they had no choice. they need more people to watch the first one before they even attempt to release the second one.

I still probably wont watch it, 3 hours is a slog, it would have to be amazing for me to sit through 4 movies that length.

It could have been a modern day Lonesome Dove on Max, instead somebody thought it was a good idea to release two 3 hour movies within a two month period. That’s not even counting the other two parts. I understand some love the theater experience, but a growing number of people would prefer just to watch it at home if given the opportunity.
