I am not a bass player and do not know much about bass rigs. But are normal bass rigs a super simple setup? Bass into amp and that’s it? (Compared to guitar that usually has lots of pedals)

Reasoning: I love watching guitar rig rundowns on YouTube (usually only watch guitar rigs). Last week they had fall out boy talking about their rigs.

When they got to bass, all he runs is a Line 6 HX stomp, That’s it (I know their bass player is not good at all). But for a big band like that it kinda shocked me. He probably has the hx stomp set up with a drive pedal here and a chorus pedal there, but I highly doubt there is much more.

It can be as simple or as complex as you want it. If you have a particular “sound” that you’re trying to achieve, then it might require one or more pedals, processor, etc. But just a basic bass sound could simply be plugging straight into your amp.

I use an Ampeg Rocket Bass RB-112 and a Behringer compression pedal.

I plug straight into a Mesa amp with Fender speakers. I have a distortion pedal but rarely use it.

Depends entirely on what I am trying to do and what kind of music I’m playing. Some bass rigs can be just as complicated as guitar rigs.

Personally, I usually just need an overdrive (I like my washburn blues overdrive) and a flanger (which I set very low and use in choruses for a little extra life).

Heck, sometimes we literally just use a di box straight into a PA system.

Most bassists are bass - cable - amp with little if anything in the signal chain.

Then again, there's Doug Wimbish (Living Colour) ... and his "pedaldoor"

my setup:

right to left: Keeley Bassist compressor/limiter -> Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi distortion/overdrive -> Southampton Utility Knife modulator (flange/chorus/phaser/tremolo) -> Quilter Interbass Class D amp

the Keeley provides a percussive punchiness that i like

i use the Big Muff and the Utility Knife sparingly on songs that require those effects

Interbass runs straight into my cabs, setup takes <5 minutes from arrival to playing, and i think it sounds great

If you have a solid PA system, your engineer will often split your signal between a DI and your “live setup”, then just compress the shite out of your direct feed and send that through front of house.

Your “rig” is nothing more than a second monitor for you. It also muddies vocals pretty bad.

As others have said, it varies.

My live set up is:

Bass > Compressor > DI > Fuzz/Distortion > EQ > Volume Pedal > Amp > Speaker

Straight into my Rumble 500. And I play plenty and get lots of comments about the sound.

Solid, solid amp. The whole Rumble line is, really.

Like everyone says, can be simple or very complex. I run a small board and it’s got everything I need.

Strobo mini tuner - has a buffer and top of the line strob tuner. Very nice.

Cali76 Bass Compressor - Outstanding, first compressor I’ve really loved.

HX One - multi for one effect at a time, use mainly for downtuning, chorus, retro reel old school saturation, and Regal preamp sometimes.

Darkglass Vintage Deluxe - Best bass overdrive ever

Sushibox Finally DI v2 - tube DI box. There is nothing on the market like this thing at its price point. It’ll hang with all the high dollar boxes all day and is the size of one normal top jack pedal.

All into the Genzler Magellan 800 and Bass Array cabs. I could plug straight into the Magellan and be just fine.

Fly rig I have is the simplest and easiest to get around. Just my EHX Battalion or Ampeg SGT-DI and a QSC CP12 monitor. Let FOH do the work.

Me: Hey Doug, which pedals do you have?

Doug: Yes
