Looking for opinions and knowledge of Tohatsu.

When I was looking for a motor it was at the top of my list, I can't give any first hand experience but heard nothing but good things about them.

Link to my thread about buying one. I pulled the trigger on it, and have 0 complaints.

I bought a used boat in 1992 with a Tohatsu and ran that thing until I got a new boat in 2020. Rock solid. It was a 2 stroke, oil injected and I never even had an issue with the oil injection system.
The boat I bought has a Yamaha 4-stroke. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Tohatsu again, even though I like the Yamahas.

They’d be 1st on my list if I was shopping 140hp or lower.

I bought a new to me skiff in 2012 and it had a 40 HP 2 stroke Tohatsu with 300 hours. The previous owner told me at the time he thought it would need repowering soon as the motor "made a weird noise". I put another 500 hours on it while it made a weird noise" before eventually it started to lose a little compression on one of the heads in 2021. I had always wanted to repower for more speed, so I bought a 50 HP 4 stroke. It is a lot quieter but seems just as solid.

Tohatsu makes the smaller Mercury’s now. A lot folks I know have them. Will probably be the next tiller handle outboard that I buy.

I have a 2020 30hp and at 376 hours I had a catastrophic failure. Tohatsu is covering everything. New powerhead etc etc etc. Its the only catastrophic failure Ive heard about. FYI, I had 1800 hours on my 30 two stroke before it got a tick

Above a certain HP, Tohatsu outboards are made by Honda !

Have a 2016 115HP on a 21 Aluminum tunnel with CC. Zero complaints whatsoever.
Previously had a 40HP on a 16 mod V I used in Sabine and in the marsh for fishing and duck hunting. ZERO complaints but it did use some gas as it was not fuel injected.

I believe they are solely Tohatsu designed/manufactured up to 140. 150hp and above is joint venture with Honda which isnt bad but they tend to be heaviest in class

Honda manufactures them for Tohatsu .

Honda makes the large motors. Everything else is made by tohatsu. They also make small hp for mercury up to the 30hp. Tohatsu is the largest boat motor manufacturer in the world

No experience with the new ones but we had a 50 and a 115 back in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Ran the dog shite out of both with zero issues that I remember. I would not hesitate to own one and my next boat will likely be powered by a tohatsu as I’m looking to get a skiff with a 40-50 tiller
