KATC - USCG calls off search for missing boater

Anyone else hear about this?

It would be nice if news articles gave specifics on location for things like this.

I saw this on Facebook before I saw any news article:

quote:

My brother, pictured here, Brandon Boutte is still missing from the boat accident on Friday with Van William Viator. The coast guard has suspended the search as of this evening, but he is strong and was a rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard himself, so I know he is still out there. Based on previous posts from Van, they were about 8 miles south of southwest pass (VR-31-A) Please, if anyone can be on the lookout for him to help bring my brother home thank you to anyone who has been on the lookout!

No, he’s from New Iberia.

The lack of details on this is weird. In the comments of one of the facebook posts a guy who seemed to be in the know said he is not posting any details until the search is over. I know the missing boater has at least 1 child, sucks.

Article says 16 ft boat in bay and comments on Facebook said they were at Tiger Shoals. Man I hope they weren’t out at the shoals with the wind we been having lately.

Yes it is. The crazy thing to me is that I just found out about it today. I’m sure there weren’t a ton of people out over the weekend if it was rough, but I’m sure more people would have gone out there to search if they knew about it.

i was in the bay Saturday and saw a bass tracker 14’ jon boat cross the bay with an older grizzled man and his wife. On the way back seas were enough for our 24’ bay boat to bang and get us wet and hold on. We always wear life jackets when riding. But he did it keeping the boat about on plane but not. We chose not to go outside the pass. The wind direction was the additive factor. And experience.

Yeah i was out there and it was blowing hard out the east. Def should not have been out in the gulf in a lil aluminum boat.

I know the other guy personally. When the boat sank he made it to the wellhead. Boutte did not

From the first article

quote:

Brandon Boutte, 49

From the one you posted from 2018

quote:

Boutte, 25,

Unless he aged 24 years in 4 it is pretty easy to see that is a different guy. You should pay a little more attention to details.

What do you fish for in a 16 ft bay boat 8 miles out of the pass? Snapper? Seems crazy for a 49 year old guys to be doing that

Trout

But it’s obviously not smart to go out in that small of a boat. I did see a Facebook post say 18’ boat so I’m not sure what’s accurate, but either way, they’re both too small for the weather conditions.

I’m not familiar with that area but there are trout 8 miles south of the pass? Is that not 8 miles into the gulf?

Thats correct, 8 miles south of the pass is the South Marsh 217 or 212 area of Tiger Shoals and is only about 10 ft deep.

The bay still has too much freshwater in it to be decent for trout. Great for sail cats and channel cats regular cats. And gar.

Ten foot of water can get whipped up pretty quickly in a thunderstorm. That's a rough place to be in a 16 foot aluminum boat.

So sorry to hear about this. Prayers for the families of those involved.

Rigs/platforms/etc in that range off the whole LA coast hold big speckled trout all summer if you can avoid sharks/dolphins

incorrect. The river at butte Larose is at 4 ft and has been low for months. Saltwater although not high levels like cocodrie is high enough to have plenty of trout in vermillion bay, the pass and the reefs right out of the pass. At least that's what my freezer and my dad's freezer says.

BTW, when u head due south for 8 miles or more, your gonna run into tiger shoals. The depth we always fish in was 12-15ft depending which platform we were at. My family has fished these areas for 2 generations. When the winds kick up out there, you better be in a good 23ft or bigger boat to maneuver the waves your gonna battle until you reach the pass coming in. Being in a 16ft out at tiger shoals is insanity. I've done in a 18ft bay a couple times on light and variable days but anything over 10mph in a smaller boat like 10-15 or 15-20mph winds , do not fish out there.

I just dont get why the decision was made in windy conditions last week to head that far out in such a small boat. I feel for the families of the guy who is missing. Knowing what I know, what my dad knows and esp what my godfather(owned his own 68ft shrimp boat and fished for 40yrs in the gulf) knows, the potential for survival is not good in those conditions.

Boat was a 18 ft all welded aluminum flat bottom hull. Yes they where at Tiger Shoals seas picked up and they took on some water from unknown source decided to head in .... bucking a strong southerly current ..bow was high and stern very low .... motor stalled and wave came over stern they were in trouble . boat went down in matter of seconds as it has no flotation bult into hull..they were close to a double platform...Viator clutched a ice chest and made his way to rig and was able to climb up on rig....Boutte was also hanging on to ice chest....maybe he tried to swim to platform too (unknown if he did or didn't) but when Viator got up on platform he didn't see his buddy! Ice chest was moving with the current! It was rough seas at the time! Recovery efforts are taking place with no results as of today!

Damn that is terrible. I don't understand why grown men refuse to wear their PFD. I have a buddy that I fish with and he runs a bass boat. I always bring my own 100mph vest. He refuses to wear it even while running 70 mph. I just don't understand his thinking.
