Gun newbie … handgun for personal protection
Posted on 9/3/24 at 12:14 am

Haven’t shot a gun in 30 years since I was a kid rabbit hunting.
Wanting (needing) to get a handgun just in case , to keep on my vehicle/house.
Suggestions? And price point of suggestions as well, as I have no clue.
Something easy to handle, and easy to get ammo.
Thanks!

Glock 19 (9mm) - Gen 3 preferred / currently on Gen 5
Perfect size for any hand and carrying.
Gen 3 has millions of aftermarket parts if you ever get into the tinkering/upgrade stage.
Gen 5 has factory options for optics ready slides. A red dot is a must in the 2020s. A light is even better.
(Not my gun)
If you don’t want to pay Glock prices, Palmetto State Armory has a few Glock Gen 3 clones.
The PSA Dagger. You can build the gun right out of the gate from them.
PSA Dagger Page
PSA Micro Dagger Page
PSA Sabre Dagger Page
Other brands you can look into:
- Shadow Systems (another Glock clone)
- Sig Sauer P365/P229
- Canik TP9
- S&W M&P 2.0 9mm Compact
I own the M&P and I love it. Same size as the Glock 19.
This isn’t mine but it’s close. I have a Holosun red dot with the same streamlight on the front. Same 3.6” barrel. All black as well.
All of these will range from $500-800.
If you want to save some money, go with PSA and build it out how you want. That Gen 3 platform is like Legos now.

There are a lot of options out there. 9mm is very easy to get ammo, for now.
Glock, S&W, Canik, Kimber, H&K, Taurus, Beretta. They all make good firearms.
My advise. Go to an indoor gun range that offers classes. Most have an assortment of firearms for purchase that you can road test. In a safe environment.
You want something reliable. A caliber that you can actually hit the target with. I like night sights. Something with capacity. Isn’t an anchor. Easily concealed. Easily maintained.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
Good luck and welcome aboard.

Suggestions?
First find one that fits your hand perfectly or close to it.

If not carrying, I would get a full size Glock in 9mm. 9mm is just easy ammo to find at a good price. Glock’s just work and it’s my easiest gun to clean and maintain. Full size because it’s easier to handle (G17, G19X, G45)

Glock is a good all around weapon. There are different manufactures with much better triggers though.
My suggestion is go to a range and rent a few of them. Get one that fits your hand and feels comfortable and that you shoot well.
That gun may very well be a Glock. It may not...

My daily carry: Glock 26 with Glock 19 mag and sleeve, Black Arch Protos IWB holster, Kore 1.5" belt.
No optic, no light, just swapped on a set of Glock tritium sights and extended slide lock. 16 rounds of 147gr JHP.
If you are going to have a gun for self-protection then go to a CHL class, get a permit, get some extra training if/when you can, and carry as much as you are legally allowed. I got away from the whole sub-compact for CCW, full-size pistol for home defense, and a long gun in the bedroom closet paradigm. Now it's my CCW inside and outside and a short AR-15 near the bed, don't really see the point of making it more complicated than that.

If you don't plan to carry, look at the CZp10F for home defense.
It's basically a Glock but with all the features you would have to add on to a Glock.
Also fits most G17 holsters.
If you want to stay standard, stick with G17 or S&W M&p, etc.
Regardless, go to the gun shop that carries a variety and fit them to your hand. Many novice shooters often have a harder time shooting Glock's accurately because of the shite trigger and soap bar grip.
Also, don't listen to the Fudd gun counter salesman. Just buy what you like best and ask to shoot it first if possible.
Look at a Walther PDP as well, but those a good bit snappier than the other options.

For home defense and car, get a Glock 19, Shield 2.0 9mm, or a Kanick. Full frames. No reason to limit yourself on rounds as you will a concealed carry gun.
For concealed carry, I like Shield Plus 9 mm, Sig P365. I use a Glock 42 as well but that round is not for everyone since it's a .380

Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP. My pistol is 2-tone, but that’s a personal preference…
