Wife has three week sabbatical next year. Looking to go back to Europe. Probably during Spring break since daughter gets two weeks off. Other option would be right when school is out (last week of May). We went on cruise from Barcelona to Rome this past summer. Wouldn’t mind going to northern Italy. Any recommendations on where to possibly go? Wife, me and 12 yr old.

The alps are going to limit you, especially if you prefer trains. You can always take a cheap flight to bounce around.

It’s criminally fast to get from Paris to Barca, marseille, etc by train. Check Paris off for the daughter, and head south. At this point, I would lean towards Croatia, etc., but that’s because I’ve drug arse all over north Western Europe already.

The charm of Europe is in small towns and stuff off the beaten path a bit (which may be five blocks from the Eiffel Tower.)

The Christmas festivals are great, try and find a spring equivalent .

Night time cruise on the seine on a private boat, BYOB, blasting some Big Sean. Women will never forget that. Ask the concierge where they like croissants locally, and watch them make a mess in the room they’ll never forget.

If you go during spring break, then I highly suggest southern Europe: Spain, Portugal ,Italy, or Greece.

Of course, you still won't be able to do beach stuff, even in those places, but the weather and crowds are ideal for exploring cities and towns.

I have been freezing cold in Paris in April -- not ideal.

If you wait until school is out, then you will face crowds, but still far less at the end of May than in July. At that point, though, the weather in northern Europe is nicer, though I have been in Norway in mid-June and wished I were there a couple of weeks later.

But I visited 21 European countries and enjoyed every one of them. You really can't go wrong. Don't let FOMO paralyze you.

We went to Paris and Normandy at the end of May . Great trip . We were in Paris for 5 days and then Normandy for 5. It was right before the D Day celebrations. I highly recommend it.

Here you go.
Two weeks in northern Italy.

If you are at all in to wine, and even if you are not.

My favorite vacation may be to fly into Florence, get a rental car and spend 10 days in Tuscany- 7 at a villa in the countryside and 3 in Florence where you turn in the car upon arrival. Then take the train to Venice for a few days and fly home from there.

A wonderful vacation.

If you mean way up north, the Dolomites and the Lake Region are beautiful.

Northern Italy with that amount of time, hmmm.

Some options to trigger inspiration:

- Venice: self explanatory, you probably need only 2 full days max here in all honesty; good options for international flights.
- Verona: possibly the most beautiful city in the Veneto region.
- Sirmione on Lake Garda: a medieval castle on the banks of Italy’s largest lake.
- The Dolomites: dramatic sweeping Alpine vistas.
- Italian Riviera (Cinque Terre, Portofino): pastel colored houses dotting steep cliffs along the azure blue sea below.
- Torino (Turin): one of Italy’s most prosperous metropols, unique aesthetic within Italy.
- Bologna: IMHO Italy’s culinary/gastronomic capital.

I’m a huge simp for the Iberian Peninsula.

In case that region also interests you, end of May is a pretty perfect time to visit.

Air temps will be warm enough to allow the possibility to enjoy the beach, sea temps may be on the cooler side but surely manageable. You beat the high season crowds and see the spring foliage arguably at its peak.

Since you’ve already been to Barcelona, I could suggest flying to Madrid spending a few days there and then heading down south to Andalucía, there you have quite a lot of spectacular towns and cities to see - Sevilla, Córdoba, Cádiz, Granada, Málaga, Nerja, La Ronda - to name a few.

Another option is Portugal, exploring Lisbon (and nearby Sintra, home to enchanting forested hills, stunning palaces and wild pristine beaches) and Porto (and the nearby Douro Valley).

Only 2 weeks if she has a 3 week time off?

We did 16 days just in Paris with 3 kids over Thanksgiving and we mostly did everything we wanted but not really, we could have easily had a month. My only point is that you could cover tons of ground or just stay in one location easily with a day trip or 4.

I would figure out your time of year first, if spring break is early March that could be a huge difference compared to late May.

I don't think I'd do March in Northern Italy unless you want to ski but I'd definitely do it in late May, but the Alps will still be cold.

Lake como is awesome
Cinque Terre is a lot of fun
Positano was great
Villas in the countryside of tuscany was awesome
Sicily is great too

Lots of good options. Olive oil tastings from all the different regions were cool.

If you stay north then you can do Lake Como and South of France.

My all time favorite Europe vacation was Germany for christmas. We went to a dozen different small towns and went to all the christmas markets. Can't recommend enough

Lemmy, my GF and I are going to Vienna in December to check out the Christmas markets. Have you ever been? Looking for any insight.

If we went during Spring Break. Looking at going first part of June. She really wants to go back to Italy. I’m looking at maybe starting or ending in Zürich. Taking the train from Venice to/from Zurich looks amazing. Most likely explore the Tuscany area as well.
