Early observations of LSU baseball

It's just the first weekend, so take everything for what it is worth. If I don't comment on a player it is because, they are what we expected them to be.
Stanfield- Fast with a little pop in the bat. He did take a bad angle Sunday and let one get over his head but I feel confident he will start in CF, unless someone just hits there way in front of him.
Milam- Looks a little heavier, we will see if that translates to more power. Took some reps at SS, but I'm not buying it.
Reaves- Has looked good defensively. He is known for his offense, the jury is still out on that.
Curiel- He is thin but not too thin. Has been getting on base a ton, walks, HBP and a couple of hits. I think he has had only one out all weekend.
Brown- I'm not sold on the pitching yet, but Brown the position player looks good.
Guidry- Pitched very good and showed some fire.
William Schmidt- Showed the stuff but it is still coming together.
Braswell- Just from watching batting practice, I think we will see more HR's.
Josh Pearson- It's only one weekend but he struck out quite a bit last fall and this weekend he had a lot of contact. Batting average could improve this year.
Dickinson- Fast and athletic. I think he is a threat to Braswell's SS job because he appears to have more range. We will see if the glove can stay consistent. Offense looks pretty good.
Mikey Ryan- He has some upperclassmen ahead of him but I like what I see, both offense and defense.
Hogg- Well built and shows potential on infield and hitting. He is still adjusting to SEC but the future looks good.
Casan Evans- As a position player he looks solid. As a pitcher he hit 97MPH once but mostly topped out at 95 MPH. Has three pitches as well, I was impressed.
Hernandez- Has looked solid. He is in the running for a starting catcher job or DH.
Eyanson- He didn't dominate but he still has to be a strong consideration for weekend role.
Woods- Arm looked strong and had an effective outing. Control still an issue though. When he was off, it was pretty far off.
Cowan- Didn't stand out to me. Too early category.
Noot - Struggled some and didn't show the big arm he has, but had a decent outing. I think he is still coming along.
Priester- Mental error, some bad swings and some bad throws. Then some really good swings, really good throws. He has a lot of size, he is athletic and has a ton of potential. He also had the only hit over the wall this weekend. Hopefully he gets some more consistency.
Yamin - Big guy and will remind you of Frey. Athletic and a ton of hitting potential but where does he play and will the hitting take off?
Anderson- I thought he looked like a Friday, Saturday starter
Shores - looks like another starter.
Mayers- still has some control issues, but nothing glaring. Jay really likes him, He has some really good stuff.
Trevor Schmidt- had some moments and shows potential. He isn't going to overtake Jones at first but could back up and DH some.
Dorsey- perhaps not the most dominant outing but has good size and shows a lot of potential.
Primeaux- had a good outing and we are short of lefties, so I think he will see a lot of playing time this year.
Connor Benge- 6 foot and 180LB but threw 95MPH.
Larson- should nail down a starting role.
John Pearson- I think he still has some developing to do, especially defensively but I love his potential.
Rizy - Looked really good, could contribute this year.
Lape- Showed a big arm, which surprised me. He could make some noise this year.
Infield: I think Braswell, Dickinson, Milam and Jones are your starters. We will see if Dickinson bounces Braswell to 3B.
Outfield- I believe Larson and Stanfield are starters but there will be battle going on for awhile.
Catcher- It's more wide open than I expected. It's anyone's guess right now.
Pitching- Anderson and Shores looked like two starters but the other roles are up for grabs.
Stanfield- Fast with a little pop in the bat. He did take a bad angle Sunday and let one get over his head but I feel confident he will start in CF, unless someone just hits there way in front of him.

Thanks for the information. Great to hear impressions from a knowledgeable person who has eyes on the players. Much appreciated.

Is this the thread in which I can making sweeping judgments about what we will see in March?

A lot of people forget he was a top 100 guy pre injury, so it’s not too shocking. Would love to see him take off.

This is definitely the thread for sweeping judgements.

Lape was a top 100 player before his High School injury but I don't know if it was as a pitcher or position player. As a freshmen he was listed as a pitcher only but was really skinny. He is still pretty thin and that is part of why the power surprised me.

I guess you could. The OP was very clear that his judgments were based on very little data.

Enjoyed watching the scrimmage with you yesterday Wild. Your commitment to the board is impressive and if people knew the sacrifices you make to be there so consistently they would be even more impressed.

I was being sarcastic, not taking a shot at the OP. I appreciate him going and watching these scrimmages and reporting back on here, since most of us don't have the opportunity to see the team until game 1.

In your opinion, is this a national championship contending team?

As long as Jay is here, my expectations will be Omaha every year. Once we get to Omaha anything can happen. I like the pitching depth and that should help in the post season.
This doesn't appear to be a dominant team but it is certainly talented enough to get us there.

Thanks Solo. I was happy to see you out there.

For you guys that made some scrimmages feel free to chime in with some observations of your own.

Loved Beck’s at bats
Arrambide will eventually be in the lineup full time somewhere.

Since you brought him up, from what I caught in the scrimmage threads, sounded like he K'd a lot. Not really unexpected or alarming, just noticed it b/c of my expectations going into next year
I also can't say I read every page of every thread, so even a smaller sample size than the small one we have already

Can you grade all the positions on a 20-80 scale? Thanks
