Early Reactions to Gladiator II - “We Are Entertained!”

I have high hopes because I’m a Ridley fan, for better or worse. That said, I was not expecting such an overwhelmingly positive response from critics after Ridley’s disastrous attempt to chronicle the life of Napoleon.
There was an LA screening last night. Denzel is getting the most praise, but Mescal and Scott’s direction are also getting attention.
With its reported $310 million budget, it will have an uphill battle to even break-even. We still have a month (Nov 22) before it releases, so hopefully it can build some momentum from these early reviews.

Rest easy, Romans. #Gladiator2 is the kind of large scale filmmaking excellence only Ridley Scott could corral. Everything about it just works. Big #Maverick vibes in its ability to conjure the past while adding something new. Bold, muscular filmmaking from a legendary talent.

Welcome back to the f*king movies! That sums up #GladiatorII. Ridley Scott's best directorial effort since "Black Hawk Down." I found Paul Mescal's work as Lucius to be one of the film's most honest surprises. This is Denzel Washington, having the time of his life in one of his most killer roles yet. A third Oscar could very well come his way. Sound, visuals, costumes, you name it, this movie's got it. Another blockbuster the Academy can most definitely embrace. Let's f*king go!

Gladiator II is Ridley Scott’s best film since The Martian. A big, bloody and bad arse action spectacle that builds upon the legacy of the original. The film showcases beautiful set pieces and a lot of epic battles. Paul Mescal shines. Denzel Washington chews up the scenery quite a bit here and looks like he is having the time of his life here."
quote:
GLADIATOR II is indeed the REAL DEAL! An epic sequel worthy of its Oscar-winning predecessor — great action, amazing visual effects, stellar performances across the board (esp. PAUL MESCAL & DENZEL WASHINGTON)! A return to form for director RIDLEY SCOTT! I was ENTERTAINED!
quote:
GLADIATOR II works best as an acting showcase for Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, & Joseph Quinn. It's largely uneven & lacks the emotional punch of the first film. However, Ridley Scott's direction is unhinged, framing this as an epic Roman opera. The visuals get the job done.
quote:
Engrave Denzel Washington’s name on the best supporting actor Oscar for ‘Gladiator 2‘ right this instant.
quote:
GLADIATOR II is a true epic and Ridley Scott’s best in years. Paul Mescal is a great action star without sacrificing his indie grit, a worthy heir to the throne. Denzel Washington EATS every line and costume without ever overplaying.
quote:
#GladiatorII is the perfect continuation of the original & an epic story in its own right. A fantastic cast, but Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, & Paul Mescal are transcendent! Countless intense blood soaked fight sequences! @GladiatorMovie demands to be seen on the big screen!

It was always going to be high because they built most of the sets and these production companies cannot seem to say no to Scott. Paramount is saying the budget is closer to $250 million.
The writers strike is one of the main reasons it went over-budget. It happened during production and they had to continue paying the crew during the strike. There was also an accident that injured 4 stuntmen and apparently Scott added a rhino fight that wasn’t originally budgeted.
ETA: I really want to know how the meeting to add the rhinoceros went

That's the most Ridley Scott thing ever.

Denzel Washington is in the movie
Obviously I am going to see it in the theater
Have seen all his movies in the theater since Ricochet
He and Ejiofor are my "must watch" actors

What, if any, tie in is there to the original?

And i will be there for it.
Gladiator was probably my first hardish R my dad took me to in theaters. I think Ghost and the Darkness was the first R I showed my kids as teenagers and Gladiator was the second.

Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, Commodus’ sister. Her son from the first film, Lucius, is grown and being portrayed by Paul Mescal as the main character for Gladiator 2. There are references to Maximus in the trailers, but I don’t want to spoil anything for you.

Was wondering who would be the main character since Russell (Maximus died)Crowe dies. Definitely will be going see this in the theater.

As long as it's better than that crap-arse Pepsi commercial.

As long as they don’t throw in any New Age music in it, I trust it’ll be good but that initial trailer with watch the throne was so bad.

I remember some kid got a pirated copy when it was still in theaters and we convinced our AP Ancient History teacher to let us watch it over several days in class.

The marketing of this movie has been perplexing to me

Like I said in the trailer thread, just give me something highly entertaining with some of my favorite current actors. I don't need it to be Oscar worthy. Just a solid movie with lots of blood, fighting, and well shot.
