Hey everyone,

I will be going to England in the spring and am looking for some information on the easiest way to get around, while not blowing the budget. I will be taking my family (Wife, 2 kids) and we are going to London for tourist stuff, Manchester for a soccer game, the east coast to visit some extended family, and then back to London to fly home.

Train seems to be a good option, and the kids will probably enjoy the novelty of it. But I wanted to check with the experts here because if I am looking at this right, it will be 500+ pounds for the 4 of us.

Is this the right pass I need? (2 kids, 2 adults, 3 days - 1 month, flexible, standard class): LINK

Is there a better way to get around or is train going to be my best option? We will be hauling suitcases, but think we can manage it.

Anything else to be aware of or insights? Thanks in advance!

Do you really need a pass? I'd price individual tickets to see if there's any savings.

Depending on what you mean by "suitcases," it shouldn't be a problem on the higher speed trains, but if you end up on a local or similar, you might have to do some juggling.

Does anyone in Manchester play soccer anymore? There's a better team at Anfield, a short train ride away.

This, rarely are passes a good deal anymore. I did a quick check on cost from London to Manchester for 2 adults and 2 kids and it was $75 total.

What? Just buy the ticket as you're standing in the station from your phone whenever you want to go. I usually used Trainline, but if I was going to stay in a certain area, I'd just download the app directly. OP is going to want to actually reserve a seat in most cases, particularly for the longer journeys.

You will probably come out better buying point to point tickets. We did a pass years ago to go from London to Exeter to Bath and back to London, and we overpaid.

Seat 61 explains everything in detail.

Thank you everyone, glad I asked.

Not the greatest time to check Old Trafford off the bucket list, but hopefully they will show up.

I did not. The trickiest part is not "driving on the left," it's dealing with right-hand drive, where you're in the wrong part of the lane, it's your mirrors being backwards, and it's shifting with your left hand (if driving a manual).

Then, you have to add in the fact that the UK is a crazy conglomeration of roundabouts, and it's just hard.

I actually first learned to drive a stick with my grandfather over there, but that was in a small town and I have no interest in trying to navigate the motorways or those giant roundabouts while trying to remember to stay on the left.

My family now live in the Sutton on the Sea area, I’m told there’s a train straight from Manchester to Cleethorpes, where they will pick us up.

Final question, is there any benefit ordering tickets on the national rail site vs. train line or one of the others? Is train line like Expedia?

Just doing a quick comparison, train line is $182.93 vs £127.50 (~$158.42).

Thanks again for the help everyone!

From what I can tell, yes, so they have to take their cut. If you can manage it, I'd use the local or national site (I think the last one was Merseyside something or other.) Other than saving a bit of money, I don't blame staff if they can't help very much with a third party booking (for anything, which is why I never use sites like Expedia and book direct.)

The train to Cleethorpes from MAN is 2h38m direct.

The trains work very well. Uber or Taxi at the location you get to. There is a National Train system that was privatized a while back and from what they told us this summer, may go back to Gov control. Either way it runs very well. Several times I was not able to find what I needed online and just went to the ticket booth and asked for what I needed. Generally they are very friendly. Trains are nice, clean and work well.
