Austin Barbecue

Here for a few days, let’s hear some recommendations.
Rolled right in to the line at La Barbecue yesterday after dropping our stuff off at the hotel. The concept of a barbecue place having a Michelin star is pretty wild to me, but it didn’t disappoint. Brisket was absolutely world class. (They were out of beef ribs by the time we got there or would’ve gotten a beef rib also.) Planning on Terry Black’s for lunch tomorrow, what else ya got?

I’ve always wanted to try Leroy and Lewis. They seem to have some menu items you cant can at many other bbq places. I believe they also have a Michelin star. I’ve never been though, so I can’t vouch for how good it is

Barbecue has gone the way of craft beer.
Last time through we went to Franklin and Interstellar. Both very good but the wait time and price point weren’t worth it for me.

They do have a star also, yes, Interstellar does as well. Franklin’s only has a Bib Gourmand, but I’m of the opinion that 3 hours in line is frankly kind of ridiculous and not the best use of our time.

Besides Franklin BBQ, I’ve been to Stubb’s & took the ride to The Salt Lick in Driftwood, about 30 min SW of Austin. Both very good

Stubbs is absolute crap, absolute crap

Stubbs isn’t even top 50 in the Austin area.
As someone else said, go to Leroy and Lewis.

One time we didn’t feel like waiting in line at Terry Black’s so we walked to Green Mountain or whatever it’s called
Should’ve stayed in line

Terry Blacks is usually a good time/value proposition. Frick waiting in line.

Was a Buick/GMC event, live music, food & drink provided. Was good for what it was, IMO Salt Lick & Franklin is much better.

The valet at our hotel recommended that as well, but it would be logistically hard to swing with no car. Could get there, but not sure what Uber options midday in Driftwood, Texas would look like to get back to the hotel in Austin.
And yes, Stubbs is a place to go see live music, not eat, in my experience from being here in the past.

KG BBQ trailer near the airport at a brewery. Guy is from Egypt and offers lamb & kofta along with the classics. Pushing the envelope on new flavors. Everything is top notch.

The food truck park they are in is pretty nice. There is a brick N mortar there serving beer and cocktails and the beer garden is a nice spot to chill.

Try Interstellar BBQ. I KNOW the name sucks but it was just as good as La BBQ

Leroy and Lewis closed their trailer when their store opened? I think so but haven’t seen it for myself.

Rollin’ Smoke trailer located at Chalmers on Cesar Chavez is also really good. Up there with the other best bbq around but no waiting in line nonsense. There’s lots of good bbq around town.
ETA don’t miss the carne guisada taco if they have them. It’s a frequent special.

Interstellar, KG, Franklin’s, Terry Black’s, and Mickelthwait. Salt Lick and Stubb’s suck in comparison.

This…I’d add Mum Foods too.

Terrible brisket. The only thing good there is the bread. 20 years ago, this place may have been a stand out. It’s bottom tier for Austin today. You don’t need to travel far to get good bbq. Salt Lick is good (more for the ambiance), but all these places are better.
