I’m looking for a “price check” on fertilizer - particularly 0-46-0 TSP and 0-0-60 potash - in SW Mississippi.

I have a new 1/2 acre plot that recently cleared and I’m still waiting on soil test but know that I’m going to need a LOT of P and K. How much cheaper is bulk fertilizer compared to bagged?

For half an acre you only need like maybe 200# at the most. You can put more out but it won't be available to the plants so it won't do any good. It takes a couple of years of plant incorporation to make it available. So correcting P and K levels doesn't happen overnight.

There's really no reason to look at it in bulk (like by the ton). You would be buying several years worth and having to store it etc etc.

For less than 5 or 10 acres bagged is absolutely the way to go

This is like the guys that think they need a 75 hp cab tractor for a 10 acre “farm”

2 40lb bags should do the trick

Not even close if I’m wanting to use build up levels. Based on the original soils test from the last “new ground” I opened I’m expecting P of maybe 25#/ac. and K of 50#/ac. and I like to keep my plots at 100#/ac. P and at least 200#/ac. K. The catch is that adding 1# of either P or K is only going to increase the levels in the soil by a fraction of a pound.

Building up and drawing down soil P and K levels

Two 50# bags won’t get me close; if I really want to hit my 100# P and 200# K levels in one shot it would take at least 400# of 0-45-0 and 500# of 0-0-60, which is getting to the point where bulk fertilizer is an option.

Couldn't agree more. Lots of recommendations on this board for tractors that couldn't even turn around on the tiny parcels
