I hope my fellow AP baws are all ok. Is there a structure fire somewhere? It's so thick that it's filtering out the sunlight to create a pretty cool looking orangish afternoon. Are there any sugar cane fields anywhere near here?

I have traveled this entire Parish today from Donaldsonville, to Gesimar, to Prairieville, Gonzales, Galvez, St. Amant and Darrow.

This entire Parish is full of smoke no matter where you go.

We are not working any fire calls.

The only thing that I can come up with is they have to be burning sugar cane.

That usually happens every year about this time.

Please share this message to ease any minds of why this Parish is full of smoke. Fire Chief James E. LeBlanc 01/05/2026

My suspicion was sugar cane fields but wasn't sold on it since we're so far from the nearest one that I know of. I guess the conditions are just right for it to hover over this way.

The color outdoors where I am is beautiful right now.

Yeah it’s extra thick this year and the ash was as bad as I’ve ever seen it the day after Christmas.

As others said, sugar cane fields. If you find that the wind is blowing in the other direction then it’s the smoke from our labs in the LP.

Man, I was raised on Bayou Lafourche and have wonderful memories of the burning if cane. The entire atmosphere was full of this smokey sweet aroma. I get flooded with memories when I smell that now.

I used to smell and see sugar cane smoke on Maui. Reminded me of home in Louisiana.

Cane fields are gone from Maui now.

I know the burning is normal, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to let the fire chief/department know when and where you'll be burning, so they could at least communicate with the public.

That’s probably because it’s now dark outside

Isn’t there a marsh fire near Houma? Or is that already contained?
