President Trump said on Wednesday evening that he expected the United States would be running Venezuela and extracting oil from its huge reserves for years, and insisted that the interim government of the country — all former loyalists to the now-imprisoned Nicolás Maduro — is “giving us everything that we feel is necessary.”

“Only time will tell,” he said, when asked how long the administration will demand direct oversight of the South American nation, with the hovering threat of American military action from an armada just off shore.

“We will rebuild it in a very profitable way,” Mr. Trump said during a nearly two-hour interview. “We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil. We’re getting oil prices down, and we’re going to be giving money to Venezuela, which they desperately need.”

Mr. Trump’s remarks came hours after administration officials said the United States plans to effectively assume control of selling Venezuela’s oil indefinitely, part of a three-phase plan that Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined for members of Congress. While Republican lawmakers have been largely supportive of the administration’s actions, Democrats on Wednesday reiterated their warnings that the United States was headed toward a protracted international intervention without clear legal authority.

During the wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, Mr. Trump did not give a precise time range for how long the United States would remain Venezuela’s political overlord. Would it be three months? Six months? A year? Longer?

“I would say much longer,” the president replied.

Senate just voted to curtail his powers in Venezuela... 5 reds voted blue. The three usual suspects plus Hawley and Young.

MAGA - Make America Great Again.

Trump's plan for Venezuela will indeed strengthen America.

You're right, you can't keep up - maybe Ancestry.com will show some Somalian or Gaza in your family history.

I don't understand why Trump gives interviews to the outlets that are faaaaaar left Marxist propaganda factories. They should not be rewarded the traffic or given the opportunity to fabricate and twist the provided interview material. Not saying that's what's happening here, but the NYT is a Commie rag.

Was it a resolution? Those are worthless.

As for what we’re doing - take the oil we’re owed, and then buy the rest to help stand up a US friendly democracy.

That’s a yuge win for the good guys and will accelerate the demise of Cuba, Iran, and our other adversaries.

What’s not to like?

So when our puppet government tells us to go frick ourselves, do we end up in a Bush-style military quagmire?

frick Trump on this. We've been down this road too many times and he was supposed to be against this.

I have to go look... just saw a blurb on GatewayPundit.

Here we go...

quote:

The US Senate on Thursday voted 52-47 to advance a war powers resolution to limit President Trump’s military actions in Venezuela. President Trump will veto the measure. Five Republican senators joined the Democrats to advance the resolution: Young (IN), Murkowski (AK), Collins (ME), Rand Paul (KY), and Hawley (MO). This is the third time the Senate has voted to advance a war powers resolution.

You're right... it's worthless. Thank goodness.

I get the NYT for free, and there is still decent journalism to be found once you sort through the propaganda

That being said, I would never give those dickheads a cent of my own money

They give us a lot.

People don't know one of the reasons Carter got trapped in Iran was because he was hoping something could be figured out to let America stay in some capacity because we had a satelite/spy station in Iran that could listen to many USSR communications and it was a base for U2 planes.

Now we (the USA) do that in Turkey which is why we are not more aggressive against their human right violations.

Trump’s entire thing is that the US should be more unpredictable. It’s difficult for me to tell when he says stuff like this whether he actually wants us to sit in Venezuela for a decade, or whether he’s just trying to pressure Venezuela’s leadership to give him what he wants.

My guess is he’s attempting to pressure Venezuela, as his actions seem to demonstrate that he is resistant to putting boots on the ground and occupying countries for years. We’ll see what happens I guess.

If your stated goal is to Make America Great Again, would pushing Russia/China/et al. out of our hemisphere aid or hinder that goal?

Yes, for the capture operation. It happened in a couple of hours. NOW begins the job of elections and forming a freely elected government. Of course we’re getting the oil also. Can’t do that in an afternoon.
