BATON ROUGE — Hunters killed a total of 16 Louisiana black bears during the second bear hunting season since it was legalized again after a more than 35-year hiatus on the practice.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said that 10 male bears and six female bears were harvested during the season, which ran from Dec. 6 and 21, 2025. This is up from the 10 harvested during the December 2024 inaugural season.

Eight bears were harvested from Bear Area 4 in northeast Louisiana during the 2025 season, the largest being a 565-pound bear. Three were taken from Bear Area 2 in central Louisiana, which includes Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes, and five from Bear Area 1, which includes Iberville, Assumption and St. Mary parishes.

In total, 26 tags were issued for the hunting of black bears.

"Our second bear hunting season proved to be successful and a tribute to the conservation effort of our department, private landowners, hunters and other partners who helped bring back the Louisiana black bear," LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth said. "We’re pleased to give our state hunters a chance to enjoy this special season. And the lottery revenue which comes from the hunt, helps to make sure the Louisiana black bear thrives."

The black bear was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1992. Black bear population numbers eventually rose after habitats were restored. As a result, the bear was removed from the list in 2016.

Were you expecting a 100% success rate across the tags?

Last year was, and maybe not 100%, but was expecting a whole lot better than 61%

So 10 people couldn’t find a bear in 2 weeks or they couldn’t go alot. What’s the problem?

No problem , just guess my expectations were higher than that, only 61% success rate for what i have heard was a nuisance animal with a hard to get tag
Why was there not more success?
is there not as many bears?
was the weather wrong
was season too short?
did the unused tags come from a particular area ?
other factors?

what were your expectations for the 26 tags?

Some tag holders don’t seem to line up private land to hunt on. Also, season dates interfere with deer hunting on private property.

I would not be suprised if at least a couple people that got tags sat at the house.

I bet Joe Schmo that gets a tag but is not in a Hunting Club on the River sits at the house vs. paying some club hundreds or thousands of dollars to help them get rid of a deer feeder destroyer....

The way I read it, at least 16 won't be a nuisance anymore. And you are slowly Darwinning out the ones who aren't shy of people.

I bet the big mast crop contributed to lower success rate.

My friend killed the 565lb bear and lined his permission up as soon as he got a tag.

Another buddy drew and had bears on his property that split the week before the season.

His second property had boars coming in just after dark and he didn’t fill.

You would think that landowners would seek out tag holders and invite them over? I was expecting all bear tags to be filled and it’s a damn shame that they weren’t.

you'd think the bears were knocked back to near extinction based on white women's FB comments on this story.

We had a hunter take a good bear (465 lbs) and we were contacted about another tag holder late in the bear season. We declined on the second one, as we didn’t have the other big bear absolutely locked down and our bucks were starting to move good.
The season structure is such that it interferes with the deer hunting in Madison Parish.
