Agreed. The payoff was not worth the buildup in season 3.

We pulled into French Riviera on my 1st ship & med cruise. Anchor windlass broke & got stuck few extra days. Was gorgeous but pricey. Especially for an E2

So much for that non-tropical mountain theory I recall bouncing around.

the early word was it was going to be a snow/ski/chalet spot. This location looks a little boring to me. Elegant of course, but something seems stale.
My guess is no carry through story lines and no Uncle Rico. Maybe the hot french gal from S3.
Mike and HBO cleaned house on the crew though --- long time Assistant Director, DP, costume designer and production designer. Major creative overhauls, so I do think you will have a much different vibe. We already know the intro will be different. Mike is also quite aware of some of the tepid reviews and criticisms about the show wearing out its welcome. My guess is we get an elevated and different feeling show. Helena Bonham Carter casting is a big signal to that.

Hopefully it can get back to S2 form. My biggest disappointment from S3 is that entire family not getting suicided. They were all fricked up people and should have been off'd, especially the youngest son.
