If Lane Staley would not have died they would’ve been way bigger than Nirvana or Pearl Jam

Probably had one of the better voices too

It’s not even close. AIC was the band.

Compared to Eddie and Kurt? Absolutely.

I love AIC but there’s no way they would be bigger than Nirvana had Cobain lived.

They were each such masters of their respective crafts (and Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney remain such masters). Jerry was the architect of AIC’s dark, beautiful sound and he deserves so much more credit than he gets for being an absolute musical genius.

I use AIC as my example to explain “heavy” ain’t about volume or distortion. Heavy is an emotion. AIC is fricking heavy.

I like Alice in Chains, they have the best average songs, but I wouldn’t want to listen to more than 30 minutes worth at a time. Pearl Jam is the easiest jam, and Nirvana has the best individual songs.

It was Soundgarden but AIC were good.

AIC was it.

On a side note, I get irrationally mad at the term Grunge.

AIC and Nirvana sound nothing alike. Nirvana was punk leaning alternative and AIC was metal leaning.

Also people lump STP in who weren't even from the PNW and while great played straight up Rock music.

Nirvana, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees are the only ones I really cared for out of that "scene" There were some smaller bands like Tad and Love Battery I liked, as well...

Never really cared for any of the other big bands of that era, though all had the odd song I liked here and there...

I agree... it was just an easy/lazy label to give the Seattle music scene, which definitely had something going for it in the late 80s/90s, whether I liked the bands or not... I didn't even mention the Posies in the post above, because they were more power pop and often get left out... but they were great..

I definitely lean way more towards the punk/garage side of that scene... and loathed STP for the record...

AIC was my favorite. I remember loving Nirvana and Pearl Jam when I was younger but to me it just doesn’t do the same for me it did 30 years ago. I still jam AIC and Sound Garden today , but not so much on Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

Later PJ fell off, but the first 2 albums are perfection and get replayed often.

I still don't even like calling them "grunge". To me, they were always metal. The solos prove it!

Yeah Jerry to me is a metal guitarist.

Its funny, Godsmack early on ripped off AIC, but nobody calls them Grunge, they're seen as straight rock/metal.

AiC was sludge. Grunge was made up by the media, not to mention the clothing companies that wanted to sell $120 flannels.

AiC has a great story at the beginning. Without Lane, you don't have a Jerry. He literally kept the guy from being homeless. While Jerry was undeniable the force behind AiC, Mad Season showed that Lane could make it without the band. Jerry's solo efforts were lackluster.

Godsmack even named themselves after an AIC song on the album Dirt.

This idea of calling AIC metal is still pretty crazy to me. I've been a fan of theirs since Man in the Box and have been listening to metal even longer and I've never heard any actual metal fans call them metal, sludge or anything like that. Dirt is their only album that's even remotely heavy.
