We were last in NIL 2 years ago and made a jump this year to get back to middle of the pack. Will the administration spend the money for a good coach and have a good plan in place for bringing in talent? We are overdue to have a tournament team and a reason to pack the PMAC. Some of my best LSU memories are from basketball games starting when I was young in the late 80s and from the 1999 season and the 2006 Final Four year. I just want to make the tournament on a semi-regular basis.

Depends on if we want to actually try in basketball. Too many idiots like the posters above have gotten to the athletic department so they've been fine with halfassing it in basketball. Stupidity doesn't allow them to understand we have an untapped money maker on our hands if we are just willing to invest in it.

Has to be a charismatic personality that will engage the fans. McMahon, Trent and Jones weren’t that guy. Brady wasn’t either but had some high highs that helped draw fans in most of his later years. This fanbase will always be extremely fickle towards men’s hoops. And we’re not landing someone like Mulkey.

Would also help it they can recruit and coach

I think with all the money we’ve devoted to football we’re going to hire another flavor of the month, mid major coach i.e. coach who has a Cinderella run in the NCAA Tourney.

There’s no reason we can’t spend some money to get a coach that can motivate, evaluate, maximize talent and develop a roster. It just takes a little money, and it doesn’t seem to be in short supply.

If they don’t do it, it’s not because they can’t; it simply because they don’t care enough. And sadly that might be where we find ourselves

It’ll be a McMahon type from a smaller school.

LSU is just not going to prioritize basketball NIL.

Ability to evaluate talent is extremely important with the portal especially since we aren't ever going to spend with the big boys in basketball.

It seems lsu chose women’s basketball over men’s. They pay mulkey over 3 million bucks.

Why? So the baseball program can lose even more money? Nobody in the grand scheme of things cares about college baseball. The TV networks sure don't and they're the ones who pay the bills.

Comments like these remind you just how shallow an understanding of college basketball most LSU fans have.

The majority of hires come from three scenarios:

1. Mid major coach
2. Catch a fallen star
3. Assistant coach

Look at the SEC alone. These teams' HC came from a mid-major program:

LSU, Alabama, A&M, Miss. St., Missouri, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Florida (i.e. the defending national champions who hired their coach from San Francisco the same year McMahon was hired)

These are the schools who hired a "fallen star". Coaches who had big success at major conf. programs, but were ultimately fired or pushed out of those programs for unsatisfactory results or other reasons:

Tennessee (Barnes fired at Texas); Arkansas (Cal pushed out of Kentucky); Ole Miss (Beard fired at Texas), Texas (Miller fired at Arizona). Auburn would fall in that list when you consider Bruce Pearl was fired at Tennessee.

Steven Pearl (Auburn) was a promoted assistant.

The only two major conference "poaches" in the league right now are Mike White (Georgia) and Mark Pope (Kentucky). White bailed out of Florida just before he got fired because Florida was perpetually average under him. Pope was Kentucky's (at least) 7th or 8th choice...after trying to land every "big fish" under the sun

LSU making a Kiffin, Johnson, Kelly type hire in basketball is unrealistic. Not because LSU "doesn't care". But because it doesn't happen in basketball very often. If you look at the Top 25 teams right now you will see VERY few who have HCs who were poached from another power conf school. Aside from Arkansas and Georgia (discussed above), the ONLY two that fit that criteria are Illinois (coach came from Oklahoma St.) and Kansas (coach came from Illinois)

So yes, it's entirely possible LSU would hire a mid-major coach...and that wouldn't be uncommon, at all. For all of those who for some reason hate the idea of trying to go after Wade, doing so and landing him would be a big anomaly (i.e. pulling a successful coach from another power conf. school who is happy with him).

This is a question most schools are gonna face in the coming years. What level can you afford certain programs to be. Do you want to be ok in everything or throw all money at a couple sports. The popular take here in Bama is we kill the baseball and track programs. Title IX makes it harder to drop womens sports but the numbers show you could drop track and still be good. Those are losers and money drainers with housing, tuition, flights, hotels.

Time to completely scrap Mens Bball. Pretty Much No One GAF about it. Proof by the fact that we have the lowest NiL in the SEC. Scrap it all together and give that $$ to Baseball.
