I am trying to book flights to Athens, Greece, from New Orleans, LA, but am surprised by the price of the tickets.
We are trying to go for about 10 days. Been looking in June and July. I have been checking Google Flights for over a month now waiting for prices to drop and they have yet to. I have even checked out flights from NYC to Athens, Dulles to Athens, Atlanta to Athens, and Chicago to Athens, thinking I could get a cheap / use points on flights to those airports and then jump on the international flight. I just got a CSR so do not have enough points available to pay for the flight to Athens but with my Southwest credit card I could use points to go somewhere domestic. I have looked through the Chase travel portal and noticed flights are a little cheaper there, but still around $1300. I will definitely book the flights through there.

Is $1,300 a ticket as cheap as I am going to get? Last time I went to Europe, I got a roundtrip flight to Paris for like $900 and was hoping to pay less than a $1000 a ticket again. I guess I am asking if that is possible or not? I will pay the $1300 a ticket, but do not want to book if prices will go down.

We are planning to do 2 days in Athens, 3 days Paros, 3 days Naxos, 1 day Santorini, and 1 day Athens to fly out. Feel free to give hotel or must dos in those islands.
Thanks.

Yes. That is the high season and what it cost. If you have flexibility, try the bumper season (may, sept)

Anytime you have a specific destination in mind at a specific time, then its going to cost more.

There are routinely Europe sales. In fact I got some notices today that there are some. You could fly elsewhere in Europe and get a connecting flight if you need to.

I used miles in and out of Athens (my flight home got screwed up at the last minute and I had to fly out of Rome, so I took a connecting flight on a different airline to Rome).

In Paros, which was by far my favorite, we stayed at a very nice family run hotel called Petres. Its one of my favorite stays of anywhere I have ever been. Stay in or near Naoussa, do not stay in Adamantas

1 night in Santorini is not enough. That's a long way to go for a short period of time. I'd cut a night somewhere else to at least stay 2

I am flying to Athens in April.
The base price on American was $750.
After paying for checked luggage and seat assignments it turned out to be $900 per person.

Price flights out of major airports with more competition like New York, Boston, DC, etc. You can find much cheaper deals from there and then just book a positioning flight.

You can also try the same thing on the other end, for instance fly into Istanbul, Rome, etc. and then book an onward connecting flight separately.

Unfortunately you're booking during the peak travel season so things are bound to be pricy.

Thanks to all. Because of work and or commitments, we were stuck going in June or July. Ended up booking flights this morning for $1100 each in July. Going Tuesday-to the following Friday instead of Wednesday-Saturday or Thursday-Sunday ended up saving some money.

If you book a separate positioning flight to New York, I am seeing it between $750-$950 for June and July dates.
