We really just need to undo the last 15 years and raise our standards again...

Seems like all facets of life have been diminished and standards have lowered to be more inclusive. Equality is fine, but don't lower the standards to achieve it.
Education is probably the worst. From the top down. A lot of the schools stopped looking at ACT/SAT scores. So wer'e just going off unverifiable GPAs? Great idea.
Grifting off the government is no longer shameful, it is celebrated.
Cheap Appliances, cars, and equipment are the norm now because nobody learns how to fix things in their house.
Every company is ready to bill you, but provides mediocre service.
I guess cocktail bars have gotten nicer.

Probably need to go back a lot further than 15 years to achieve that.

No lies detected. It’s pretty wild how much lower standards and expectations are even in supposedly good schools. It’s nuts how much hand holding even high school students in honors courses are given these days at 17/18 years old.

No arguing any of what you say…but it is all a matter of perspective. We have a much better standard of living than we had when I was a kid and a lot of the reasons for this are things that you mention,

Yea, people put so much self worth on their college education. But when you actually go look at what's going on in college, it's a bunch of dumb kids being taught useless common sense stuff by professors who have never had a real job. That's obviously a big generalization, there are smart teachers and students, but you can sort them out by specific majors and courses. STEM vs liberal arts. A liberal arts degree can be good, but we really dont need all of these liberal arts offerings at all of these small schools.

Maybe once Mexicans and Indians are the majority we won’t lower every standard and make everyone’s life worse to cater to a small segment of the population
But then we’ll always have to look down to avoid the poo on the streets

I at least want to go back to before people wore pajamas in public

It's definitely true that a heightened standard of living is responsible for a lot of this, primarily in terms of motivation.
When hourly workers are over leveraged to the hilt and driving luxury cars at 23, regardless of how that ultimately works out for them, where is the motivation to grind for more? And for those that aren't stretching too much, they look around and see relatively unsuccessful douchebags driving 5 series and Teslas and Raptors - are they interested in joining that "class"?
I don't mean to make everything materialistic, but I definitely think it's a factor. Even non-materialistic driven people with better priorities and wholesome worldviews still viewed the luxury car or a Rolex or whatever as a life benchmark decades ago.
Add to that that some of these same people have abandoned or given up the things that will add value to their lives - home ownership, children, etc. as being out of reach, and it's a really bad combination.
Of course, the above is probably just a sliver of the overall picture, but I think the same themes can be applied to a lot of things - how we view/pursue college, travel, etc.

Cars are cheap now? When did that happen?

It seems that there’s some negative news daily now
That’s the largest change, IMO

As far as students go, the no student left behind thing Obama put into play definitely didn’t help things.
However, the DEI stuff from Biden really spiraled work place stuff out of control. Merit meant nothing and not to mention, the only female fighter pilot schools, no white male medical schools, race based hiring standards made things really crappy for a while.

No Child Left Behind was George W. Bush, not Obama.

Concur with all points.
The amount of non combat vets required VA disability is sickening, many at 100% and are still working other jobs.
I don’t think we will ever go back to a time of pride, work ethic and personal responsibility though.

geting rid of HUD is a good start
Posted on 1/14/26 at 10:58 am to theliontamer
It started with the financial crisis of 2008, but a lot of the roots of the problems go back much further than that.
