Enrollments in undergraduate certificate and associate degree programs both grew by about 2% in fall 2025, while enrollment in bachelor’s degree programs rose by less than 1%, the report found. Community colleges now enroll 752,000 students in undergraduate certificate programs — a 28% jump from just four years ago.

Under President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” which Congress passed last year, students enrolling in workforce training programs at community colleges may be eligible for Pell Grants, a type of aid awarded solely based on financial need. The grants are worth up to $7,395 for the 2025-26 academic year. Previously, these funds were only available to degree-seeking undergraduate students.
Wasn't aware that Pell Grants could be used for training programs. That's a game changer

2 years of Community College study is Free in Tennessee under the "Tennessee Promise" program. It's all funded by the state lottery. I
t also covers Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) which provides workforce development training and certification for people who want to go into the trades instead of pursuing a degree.

kinda how it should be.
A 4 year business degree and a lot of debt isn't going to get you very far these days.

I wonder how much that 28% jump is fraud with scammers farming student aid using fake AI students + stolen info.

Excellent. The world does not need more art history majors.

It still needs regulations and based on recent history it likely will be extremely limited in scope.

In before the usual suspects lecture us that life without a Bachelors is doomed to broken bodies and financial failure.

Probably the way to go. Nothing wrong with taking intro courses at a community college (assuming the credits transfer)

All of the "learn a trade" and "retire as a millionaire plumber" social media videos and messaging apparently are working, but generative AI job displacement eventually will cause problems for tradesman too.
Instead of seeing the same 3 or 4 heating and cooling company vans riding around here, one day there will be 8 or 9. Will be much harder to retire as a millionaire plumber.
My advice for young people seeking a career path is "I don't know what the frick to tell ya!"
