What has happened to this country? Everyone now craves the control of big government?

When I was growing up and trying to understand politics it seemed to me that most of the crucial political arguments centered around the idea of government control. As I studied history and read about the decisions of our government I started to see a pattern where people often stood up to try and limit the control of the government, sometimes successfully and often times not.
You can point to crucial moments in our history when the government found a way to gain power, slowly and also quickly at the same time. Unfortunately there are very few moments in history where our government has lessened any of its power.
It seems like over the last 20 years or so, our population has been groomed into giving government control. I used to believe conservatives generally wanted the government to have less control, but now I see most people just want the government to control them in a way they like. Political arguments no longer center around whether the government should be able to do something, instead it’s how they should use their power in a way that one side likes.
I fear that the political climate today has everyone unable to see the forest through the trees. As long as the government uses its power to advance an agenda we agree with, we are all so willing to just allow them to control us. Very few people think forward about the implications that can have into the future, and what it might look like when the government is using that same power you so happily let them take to push an agenda you do not agree with.
I fear for the future of our country when our citizens so willingly allow the government to do whatever it wants and the fight is over what they are doing with their unlimited power and not over the fact that they have that power in the first place.
Aren’t the people supposed to control the government and not the other way around?

With populists, expect populism.

War is the health of the state. And since the end of WW2, the United States has been at war, either openly or covertly, almost constantly. When you're the world's policeman abroad, why wouldn't you expect that same government to have an interventionist mindset on domestic and economic issues?

And we haven't had any more world wars since then, and nobody has used nuclear weapons again, and the greatest threat to all life on the planet (the U.S.S.R.) was bankrupted in large part by some of those proxy wars you mentioned.
I like that outcome.
But you do make an interesting point.

The call for more government correlates with the shift from a high trust society to a low trust society.
A society that is homogenous and has people operating from common language and moral code will be high trust. It's people will self-regulate and need less government.
Diversity brings low trust and the corresponding call for a strong man to keep those not trusted in line.

The American citizenry was indoctrinated by its very own government to accept more government, that government was the ultimate protector, that no citizen needs a gun, and children do not need a mother and a father in their family unit. The MSM provides ongoing support and indoctrination. Even the MSM has an LGBTQP employee percentage that is 27.843 times bigger than the US population percentage of LGBTQP.
It will hurt to get this straightened out but it is a hurt that must be felt if Americans wish to enjoy a real life once again.

Our federal government is too large. It needs to be at least 30% lower on headcount (pre covid) and must be brought the heel on spending levels.
If we fail to do these two things we will cease to become an independent nation

Consider "The Shopping Cart Theory" then think about how many people are able to self-govern. It's not surprising.

At present, we have two opposing factions trying to control our country. One faction seeks to seize control of our government and use whatever means they feel are appropriate to control everyone. If the other faction takes a hands off approach to government that would be suicidal. When sanity is restored, perhaps then we can return to limited government.

We're blaming this on diversity now?

populism
The single most mistranslated and misused term in politics.
For the record, the term originally stemmed from leftist movements.
Also for the record, all democratically elected officials, by default, must be populists or they wouldn't get the votes.
quote:
POPULIST - a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups

Causation =/= correlation

Keep in mind, 30% of the colonists supported The Revolution. 70%!! wanted to stay with the crown.
Sadly, the overwhelming majority of the population CRAVES subjugation for the inherent "saftey" it provides. After all, if you agree with someone and they are making all the choices, things cant be that bad, right?
Freedom, on the other hand, "sucks" because its so goddamn hard. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Some people cant stand that.
These days, life is so fricking easy from a historical perspective that loud mouth idiots think they have a say in the matter without having to put any skin in the game. Historically, when people without skin in the game start telling people with A LOT to lose how things should be it never works out well.
Guess we'll see how it goes.

It's called Pax Americana and it's basically been the height of human existence on earth, especially since the "new world order" emerged post-Cold War.

I mean it's up there with the other malleable terms like globalism/ist, Deep State, lawfare, etc.

Uh, yeah, and that's baked into my comment (and profile quote). It's a play off JerseyTiger's famous "with socialists, expect socialism" profile quote from days gone by.
I'll take this time to add socialism/ist to the list above, for these reasons.
