I threw together a bluebird box yesterday morning with a cedar fence board I had lying around and put it up in my backyard. There are already several pairs of birds fighting over it. Is it because of the cold?

Doubt it, have several pairs inspecting our three houses. Pretty nice section 8 digs we have.

I had one flying around it in the sleet today but I don't know that he's checking the box. If he is, it's ready.

How do y'all prep your boxes? I usually just throw the previous nest out after the babies leave. I’ve heard of spraying them with bleach or something though. I still have a nest in there right now from who knows when that I need to take care of.

I just clean it out and put it back up. Don't wash it or anything. Couldn't hurt I suppose.

They will nest in the old nest, cleaned two this year because they were down for some dirt work. Been years since they were cleaned out.

I kept mine up from spring on accident. I see them inspecting it every so often. Last year I had 3 sets of blue birds nest in it.

bluebirds will sleep in boxes and old cavity nests even in times of the year when they are not nesting...maybe that's what they're looking for...

I just typically take the old nesting material out and let it dry out for a day or so….i figure that will kill any old parasites still around. I have mixed feelings about leaving the old nesting material nearby for the same reason, but usually do it anyway.

Had two boxes and squirrels chewed the holes bigger and took over. Pissed me off. Is there anyway to keep them bastards out?
