Sums up most Bush-era Pubs and some of our “principled” friends.
“Oh my, we need to really think this through before we go THAT far. We don’t want to needlessly upset our colleagues on the other side of the aisle”. If they get THAT angry with us it might hurt our chances at re-election”.
That type mindset goes a long way towards helping explain the Left running roughshod over the GOP in most of the many years between Reagan and DJT.

Also, Anti depressants anti anxiety prescription drugs tend to allow some folks to think anything they do is acceptable because it makes them feel good. IMO.

Matt is being sarcastic but it is the essence of immigration as a political issue in the United States:
Being tough on immigration goes positive in public opinion when it is an abstract concept. The public inverts on the matter when it is actually done in practice.
At the end of the day, I am not sure there can ever be a consistent policy position for the government on this matter because it seems that the "average American" wants immigration enforcement that is bloodless and without black bagging but that is an impossibility. Forcibly removing people who don't want to leave is going to be messy business but not many have the stomach to see it in practice.

Yup. People love abstracting away the violence it takes to make their life comfortable. Reality is the reason many in the world hate us because our large middle class sits on the backs of half or more of the rest of the world. Broadly speaking, I think the conservative-liberal divide in the United States comes down to those who say "tough shite" and those who feel a lot of guilt about that.

The lawful use of deadly force is considered justifiable homicide. It’s not murder, which is a crime.
