The Steely Dan Thread: Danman’s Discussion on Dan

Alright fellas. It’s been a while since I’ve started a thread on here. It’s cold outside and I had a few drinks after dinner, and frankly I feel this is a subject to be attacked earnestly and with a sense of purpose.
That of course is the topic of Steely Dan being the greatest band of all time. That just wild arse mix of combing jazz concepts and rock, a legendary high musical standard for the process of recording albums, and dark sarcastic lyrics totally open to interpretation. They’re the best.
So my vision for this discussion is for friendly and robust debate amongst friends about the band Steely Dan. They’re great I think they kick arse
Ok I’ll start with this format but feel free to post any and all thoughts, facts you find interesting, opinions, rankings, whatever.
Steely Dan albums ranked (by me):
1. Aja
2. The Royal Scam
3. Pretzel Logic
4. Gaucho
5. Katy Lied
6. Countdown to Ecstasy
7. Can’t Buy a Thrill
8. Two Against Nature
Any time thoughts or debates you’d like to start, let’s do it

One of my favorite things about Steely Dan is the interpretation of lyrics. They keep it very open and vague and that’s always really fascinated me
But this one’s really obvious lol. But the fuggin bass line on this, jesus lord have mercy. And that synth line too.
It’s about always wearing condoms. “Never gonna do it without the fez on…”. One of the easiest to interpret. And that little guitar solo from 1:57-2:08. Just a great song
The Fez

Would you consider SD to be yacht rock?

Yes. But the originators and by far the best musical output of the subgenre.

I've only recently started diving in to SD. There's a lot of really great stuff, but I've hit a couple of real stinkers: "Glamour Lifestyle" and "Cousin Dupree."
I dig the shite out of most of the rest I've spent time with. Current fave songs, leaving out the obvious radio hits (in no order): Home at Last, Midnight Cruiser, Night by Night, With a Gun, Dr. Wu.

quote:I don't have a strong opinion on ranking these because I am more of a hits listener than album, but the placement of The Royal Scam and Can't buy a Thrill doesn't look right for what I like. I'd switch them.

I agree with your rankings.
Not much more to say. They set the musical standard when much of the industry was mindless disco.
All the musicians they used are my favorites, no surprise there.
I have a yacht rock band and the SD songs are always the most difficult to both learn and replicate.

1. The Royal Scam (my current personal favorite and contains the best non-greatest hits song of theirs--Sign In Stranger;
2. Aja-technically perfect;
3. Kay Lied-my favorite from college;
4. Can't Buy a Thrill-one of the best debuts of all time;
5. Pretzel Logic-still in the great album category, which is insane considering we are already at five albums but some songs are better than others;
6. Countdown to Ecstasy-very good not great album but Show Biz Kids and Razorboy are great;
7. Gaucho-very good not great album;
8. Two Against Nature-one of these things does not belong and its this the worst of their ablums.

The group's overall scope declined after the departure of David Palmer.
