In my experience, buy the cheapest kite possible because it will either wind up in a tree or the kids will quickly get bored of it and it'll sit in a closet for years.

I tried to buy a couple of kites two or three years ago, but couldn’t a single retailer that carried them or had one in stock. Had to order off Amazon.

I know you said big box stores, but i have a couple of the Delta Kites from Kitty Hawk Kites that are well made and fly really well. these are not kids throw away kites as they run from $44-$120. I bought mine in Pensacola at the store but they are available online.

You must mean one of these if they still have some around:

Fun fact before starting Walmart, Sam Walton was a Ben Franklin franchisee. That was when he learned that in order to be successful he had to corner the low price game, so he bought things in bulk and passed the savings on to the customers.

I’ve been happy with the inexpensive bat kites I’ve bought from WalMart in the past. The trick is getting the timing right. Big retailers will sell them on a seasonal basis, just like pool noodles etc.

TG&Y was my go to store for all things, kites was one.

Were there any other kites being made in the 80’s other than this one?

OP said nothing about children being involved with the purchase.

Wife gets them from Dollar Tree or whatever dollar store.

As a kid in a small LA town we had a general store nearby. Every spring the ole lady owner would stock up on paper kites. Either a clown face or skull and crossbones. With a 20-ft. tail those old paper kites were great.

Not being a smartass, but this seems to be a prime (pun intended) Amazon purchase.

Just based on available options alone.
