All flights to and from El Paso International Airport in Texas have been halted for “special security reasons,” the Federal Aviation Administration said early Wednesday. “No pilots may operate an aircraft in the areas covered by this NOTAM,” the FAA said, using the abbreviation for Notice to Airmen. It listed the reason as “temporary flight restrictions for Special Security Reasons.

The restriction for the airspace over El Paso and the neighboring community of Santa Teresa, New Mexico came in at 6:30 a.m. UTC, or coordinated universal time (11:30 p.m. ET). It will end at the same time on Feb. 21.

But the NOTAM said the airspace was classified as national defense airspace. Deadly force could be used on an aircraft if it is determined that it “poses and imminent security threat,” it said, adding that pilots “may be intercepted, detained and interviewed” by law enforcement and security personnel.

Given that something like this hasn’t occurred since 9/11 and the FAA announced it in the middle of the night, it’s a bit unsettling.

This is not a good thing and spooky as shite.

Wow, has to be some credible evidence of something big planned for that area for sure.
Hopefully we find out soon enough.

Four million passengers a year. About 1/3 the size of New Orleans.
Could this be part of a ramp up to an operation against Sinaloa or other cartels?

This is pretty spooky… Over/Under on 5 smaller planes being shot down in US airspace along the border in the next week?

Isn’t this how Half Life 2 begins?

Certainly seems like it’s either that or some Die Hard 2 shite where we are going to utilize that airport for bringing in arrested people

Says it’s for 10 days. That’s crazy.

Fedex 1138 flew right through the middle 3 minutes ago.

Closed 17k feet and below. You can fly above it. Still shuts down the El Paso airport for 10 days.

Well. This makes me feel real good about my flights to California and back next week.

They are called TFR’s and they are posted every day all over the US. Not at all unusual.
Do some research.

Sucks for UTEP basketball!
El Paso is the 22nd largest city and damn near a million people.
Albuquerque and Phoenix are like five hour drives. This is very weird.

When a 10-day airspace restriction gets issued overnight, commercial flights start getting canceled, and even people at Fort Bliss weren’t aware of it beforehand, that’s at least worth paying attention to.

Such an airspace closure over a major city in the United States is unprecedented, with the last time such a restriction like this was issued occurring after September 11, 2001.
Uhhhhh wtf???
