"The experience that tech workers have had over the past year, of watching AI go from "helpful tool" to "does my job better than I do", is the experience everyone else is about to have. Law, finance, medicine, accounting, consulting, writing, design, analysis, customer service. Not in ten years. The people building these systems say one to five years. Some say less. And given what I've seen in just the last couple of months, I think "less" is more likely."

I agree with this. Government will likely have to step in and establish barriers to entry ( human credentials) for many professions.

Yep. They aren't racing to dump the ridiculous money into these things just because they can render a quick cartoon sketch of your favorite family photo. The corporations want to bump that decimal and the players want weapons.
I realize corporate thought typically goes no further into the future than the end of the day, but I still wonder how these companies are going to sustain as fewer and fewer have the means to buy goods and services. Is everyone going to live on some nebulous line of credit and get thrown into a debtor jail when they get out of line? Really, the AIs don't scare me. It's the evil fricks who want the AIs that do.

How does this work with a capitalistic economy? Especially on a global scale? How can we argue that the best for generating revenue and thus tax dollars is to use human labor over AI labor?
If we decide that human credentials are required by law and European countries or China decides that they're going full throttle with AI, how does that help us?
I have no idea about the future. We'll need UBI but welfare has already shown us that people cannot handle receiving an income when they have no responsibilities or purpose.
What does a governing and economic entity do with unimaginable levels of technology and a large surplus of people who no longer serve any functional purpose?

So when AI screws up a medical procedure or a contractor builds erroneously off of AI plans and people and/or the environment are harmed, who is held accountable?

There are a lot of very rich, very influential people in politics who have been very open about their desire to see the human population significantly decrease.

Maybe. What's going to happen when there isn't enough electricity to run AI? The more it does, the more energy it requires. At some point the cost of infrastructure isn't going to be worth the investment.

Good point. And it means that humans might only be employed for the sake of shifting liability around.
