I just started shopping for a new car and got an offer from a dealer in Houston. I see they have doc fee listed at $900. I Googled doc fees in Texas and it says that the legal limit in Texas is $225.

Can any of you baws in Texas confirm this?

I have never bought a car while looking at line item costs. I always negotiate a one number price for everything and I dont care how they get to it. Not my problem. The key here is your number has to be lower than their number until you iteratively find their lowest number. The lowest number at one dealer is not the same as another one.

Charging over $225 without following this process (or if the OCCC deems it unreasonable) can be considered overcharging, which is a violation. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) disciplinary matrix lists penalties for overcharging documentary fees, starting at fines like $1,000–$5,000 per vehicle in serious cases.

Did some light research into it and looks like they’re trying to screw you. Might have to play hardball with them and threaten to walk away if they’re going to be sheisters.

I would find a better dealer outside of the city. That's what I always did. Houston car dealerships are the very definition of "Stealership".

Not a real fee. Don't pay it.
