It’s ironic and frustrating as hell to me that time and again, the CIA has cost America more blood and treasure than can possibly be calculated.

First I’ve heard about the CIA involvement in the Ayatollah.
He was exiled when the Shah was installed by the west.
Hard to believe the CIA did a full 180 and brought him back.

The Shah was not installed in 1953, he became Shah in 1941 when his father was forced to abdicate for being cozy with the Nazi’s. In 1953, the PM was forced out for being cozy with the USSR. The British were also involved in the ouster.

Ayatollah was in exile in Paris and the demand from the Iranian "street" was huge for precisely him. I don't think the CIA has anything to do with installing him. If you can find it in the bargain basement department of a bookstore, Jimmy Carter writes a ton about all this, pretty interesting, it seems like there really were no good options.

I am not aware that Khomeini was installed by the CIA. It seems Carter, who tried to minimize the CIA, may have used the CIA and other channels to curry favor with Khomeini in order not to lose influence in Iran when it was apparent the Shah was toast. In any event we thought we were manipulating Khomeini, Bagarzhan, and the other players but in reality Khomeini played us for dummies.

The Iranian people democratically elected their leader in 1949 and we overthrown so we could steal their oil with the shahs approval.

The CIA was formed in 1946 after back to back brutal world wars. There hasn't been another since. That's not luck.
