European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera disputed U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to carry out his threat to cut commercial ties with Spain, pointing out the EU's foreign trade is negotiated as a bloc.

"It is not possible to engage in [individual] commercial retaliation or business relationships," Ribera said Wednesday in an interview on Spain's Cadena Ser radio network. "The trade negotiations of each and every one of the 27 member states of the European Union are the responsibility of the Commission and it is not possible to divide or fragment them."

Trump on Tuesday threatened to halt trade with Spain after Madrid barred the U.S. from using jointly operated military bases on Spanish soil to attack Iran.

Ribera, Spain's EU commissioner, on Wednesday said Washington's attempts to single out individual EU countries is "profoundly disturbing, not only for societies, for peace, for cooperation, but also for the economy, and has immediate consequences in everyone's economic activity as a whole."

But she she also expressed skepticism regarding Trump's threat and said, "the American federal government knows" how the EU's commercial relations are handled and "is not interested in breaking trade relations."

To quote Andrew Jackson (one of Tump's heroes)

"They have made their decision - now let them enforce it"

“Halt trade”

Technically, the EU minister is correct. Spain’s products can be obtained through the EU.

But that’s a strict definition. As usual with Trump, don’t take him literally but take him seriously.

The U.S. can boycott products from Spain. The government can avoid buying Spanish produced goods, can encourage states to do the same, can foment a movement of individual supporters to avoid Spanish products, etc.

Spain will feel that impact, even if it’s not huge.

Trump’s ultimate goal is to dissuade Spain and other nations from taking sides against the U.S. This “halt of trade” is just one of many unofficial cards he could play to do that.

All EU nations are going down the wrong path. The path that destroys any historical similarities and connections. If you are self destroying yourselves, that's on you. We are cutting the cord.

I just wish Trump would harp on this self destruction harder and every time he mentions it. Yes he mentioned that Spain leaders are bad, but what they are doing to destroy their country needs to be touched on more.

Huge mistake for that dummy to pipe up and say this. Maybe she is mostly right, but just shut up and let it happen discretely. Antagonize Trump and he’ll figure out a way to stick it to them.

So, Spain makes decisions hoping they can find cover from the EU. Then the EU should suffer if the EU gives Spain shade!

They felt it back in the late 1990's when they kicked us out of Torrejon. Torrejon was a major hub of traffic flowing from the US to Saudi for Desert Storm
