County Seizes Family Home over tax bill that was never owed

took control of the house. Under Michigan law, the tax exemption continued automatically as long as family members lived in the home. Marc lived there with his wife and young child. No additional paperwork was required.
But local tax assessor Patricia DePriest saw things differently. Despite clear statutory language protecting the Pungs, she retroactively denied the exemption for several previous years, arguing that Scott’s heirs should have resubmitted paperwork.
The Pung family took their case to the Michigan Tax Tribunal, where an administrative law judge ruled in their favor. But DePriest wasn’t deterred and again denied the exemption. When asked during a subsequent hearing about the administrative law judge’s ruling that the family didn’t need to file additional paperwork, she replied defiantly: “I don’t care what he says; the law says that you do.”
DePriest reported the Pung home as delinquent over approximately $2,000 in taxes, penalties, and costs that the family never owed. Even though the County knew about the tax tribunal and a Michigan court case involving the exemption, the County began foreclosure proceedings to take the Pung home. In 2015, Isabella County seized the home—which it had assessed at nearly $200,000—and later sold it in a fire sale auction for only $76,000.
The County kept all the money.

The single greatest harm to our national civility has been the removal of the plain old arse-kicking as a means of correction amoung un-related parties...

MI real estate law is shite.
My mom owns a a home with her 3 deadbeat brothers in a joint tenancy, right of survivorship they inherited.
She is the only one who pays taxes, insurance and up keep and has been for last 20 years.
They still have just as much rights to home as she does and will take her share if she dies.

Nothing ever happens to the ones doing it. They may win a lawsuit but it's the taxpayers who will eat that.

I know what my Grandpa and Uncles would have done. That’s why that kind of stuff did not happen back then.

So tell me what is missing?
This is a court case for foreclosure in front of another judge with access to the administrative judge decision and a foether ruling that would say they owe $2000 and to pay before a certain time or it will be set for sale
Something is missing

None of this is out of the ordinary.

this case was argued in front of the Supreme Court on Feb 25, 2026. County had a poor showing.

Review granted but WTF did the lower court judge do with the administrative ruling that a renewal was not necessary under the law ??

There’s more lunacy to the story. So after the house sells at auction the family takes the county to court. The county then says they only owe them the proceeds from the auction minus the debt owed, not the assessed $200k value of the home.
I didn’t read the outcome but my goodness, some people need to be tarred and feathered. That is outright harassment and theft. I hope they go after her department and her personally for this utter stupidity.
