“The Iranian ships have been getting out already, and we’ve let that happen to supply the rest of the world,” Bessent told CNBC’s Brian Sullivan.
Tanker traffic through the Strait has plunged as Iran attacks commercial ships in the Persian Gulf. But the Islamic Republic has continued to export millions of barrels of oil through the narrow sea route despite the large U.S. Navy presence in the region.
Iran exports about 1.5 million barrels per day. The Trump administration believes tanker traffic through the Strait will increase before U.S. Navy and allied forces start escorting commercial ships, Bessent said. Tankers that supply India have transited the Strait, he said. The U.S. believes some Chinese ships are also making it out of the Gulf, he said.
“We think that there will be a natural opening that the Iranians are letting out, and for now we’re fine with that. We want the world to be well supplied,” Bessent said.

I actually like this. Let iran know for every opposition tanker that gets blown up, we blow up 3 of theirs.

But we haven’t hit any of their tankers despite them hitting vessels flagged from other countries.

Not yet. Truth is it hasn't been a strategic target for the US up until now. They escalated, now we should let them know what the response will be moving forward. Let their allies know as well what our response will be to Iranian tankers. Maybe they will put pressure on Iran to chill the frick out with attacking merchant vessels.

You still seem to think that Iran doesn’t hold any cards. We rightly fear global economic crisis, famine, etc which Iran can threaten, despite their military being decimated (according to Trump).
Bessent is admitting that this threat is working.

If the US and Israel can separate the regime from the energy sector, that’s a massive win. The next leader can inherit a functioning economy and get on his feet quickly.
I’d say shutting down the economy now that the Ayatollah is dead and weapons program destroyed- that serves very little military purpose at this point.

Is it only Iranian tankers making it out? Iranian tankers supplying India? Indian tankers supply China?

Carrot and stick approach
We let their tankers through they let the rest go through. They hit another ship. They lose the ability (and more) to ship oil. And we show India and China we “tried” to work a deal but Iran defaulted. So now now oil for you. Forces China and India to pressure Iran.
