UConn coach Dan Hurley downplayed his bizarre interaction with an official at the end of Sunday's historic NCAA tournament victory against Duke, saying he thought the veteran referee was looking to "chest bump me to celebrate."

Lmao why would an official be trying to do a celebratory chest bump with a coach during the game

Prety common knowladge to anyone watching Hurley had the refs in his pocket the whole game. Not suprising the ref couldnt help but want to celebrate his big payday!

even though what Hurley did was beyond moronic, I’m proud of the ref for not letting his ego take away a moment from the players

In a game that Duke shot more free throws and one where the final shot had zero impact on the betting line?

He should’ve said that he got really up close to his face because he couldn’t hear what the referee was saying because of how loud it was.

I honestly think that is what happened and they both walked a little close and it became awkward and/or more than it seemed.

The article didn't say that he was pulled from the Final Four, it said that he wasn't given a Final Four assignment. Big difference.

It would not have been his ego taking away from the players, it would have been Hurley. I think the ref was well within his right to pop him with a tech and I wish he would have.

His career is almost certainly going to end in a blazing inferno when he makes a very poor emotionally charged decision. Dude is an embarrassment and his AD should send him to PR training before he does something really really dumb.

Hurley was laughing when he made the comment quoted in the OP. It was a joke. The ref came out and said this was all a non issue. He was trying to tell Hurley that there was still time on the clock, and Hurley just got too close and awkward.

Every program in the country, every single one, would take Dan Hurley as their coach right this minute.

He's an arse. But his personality is almost assuredly part of what makes him very successful. If you try to change that you change him...which could have an effect on his coaching success.

Will it flame out eventually? Who knows? But if I'm UConn I ride it for all that its worth. Bob Knight was the same way and it ended in a flame out...but also with multiple national championships. The program has generally been an "also ran" for the last 25 years since he was fired. I'm sure most Indiana fans would love to have a guy that often had them at the top of the sport even though he was a jerk than perpetual mediocrity
