Dale is 90 and Temple isn't as big of a player in the local basketball scene as he used to be. Nor is being tied into the BR/LA basketball network as important in terms of recruiting with NIL and transfers being the way many rosters are built today. But what IS important is raising money to pay the players. Jones has long been tied into that network. Wade isn't hiring Jones to call the sets during the game (though he will lend some experience of being a HC for well over a decade). He's hiring him (primarily) to help generate the funds to get the players running the sets.

I don't know how I feel about this.

Johnny Jones bought us pizza and donuts for camping on the PMAC right before we got hornswoggled by Buddy Hield. He's alright in my book

It would be somewhat akin to Kiffin hiring Orgeron to be on staff in some capacity. O wouldn't be expect to run the program or make critical game-approach/plan decisions. He would be asked to fill a role at which he is good (recruiting and DL coach). Same for Jones. He's not being asked to develop the gameplan. He's filling a role.

Not sure why anyone would be upset about this, he is one of like 4-5 assistant coaches. This is a guy with a ton of head coach experience and was a HC here for a handful of years, he knows the lay of the land. He's here for a specific thing in mind, not to run the program. Let him do what he's best at and nothing else

Doesn’t make any sense other than being tied to the local nomenclature.

It does make sense, jones can recruit he isn’t a technical guy and it’s easy enough to placate Dale and Collis Temple. We might as well have them get along instead of being impediments to progress.
If Wade could only hire 2 guys then this would be a wtf but ties to the area, placates the guy with his name on the court and provides good recruiting.

I think it has much more to do about keeping them at arms length so Wade can handle other things than keeping them happy.

It does accomplish that plus those that are older and support them are more likely to donate if they aren’t throwing a fit

He's a guy that's been a coach at the college level for 40+ years and a HC for 25+ years, so he's doing something right. He's well respected and has relationships throughout Louisiana and Texas on and off the court. Relationships with head coaches of high school programs and AAU programs. Plus he can manage the relationships of Dale and Temple. I think this is a really good addition.

As I said in the other post about this topic. These comments are so stupid. Nothing Will Wade does is because Dale Brown said so.
Shaq wants to invest in the new arena. Must be Dale Brown still wanting to control everything, right?

More than football, LSU basketball is tied in more with the "local nomenclature" in terms of support. That's because a significant portion of the support comes from the BR metro area considering you aren't going to have a lot of people traveling from other portions of the state for what are often weekday games. Given how important fundraising is now to roster building, a guy who has relationships with potential donors in the "local nomenclature" might be a good addition to the staff. Again, he's not being hired to be the HC, or even the lead assistant.
It can be a bit difficult. But sometimes taking the 4 seconds to look beyond the surface of anything can reveal the logic behind the action.

The question is, what is he best at?

Hey I was in that group! And I’ve said the same thing. Him and his assistant came up and talked with us. That was a fun night. We had maybe a dozen guys. Wish we’d had a better showing but that was a hell of a game.

I could be mistaken

No Johnny Jones! Some have complained about Will Wade when he got caught giving money to players during his first stint with LSU, how many remember Johnny Jones gave the bag full of money to a LSU recruit for Dale Brown. He had his opportunity to be the HC at LSU and failed miserably, Jones needs to remain where he is now.
