I see all this commotion about moving states and half responses are like “Yeah my company relocated me” or “My partner got transferred so we just moved.” Cool. Congrats. That must be nice. Some of us didn’t get the corporate escort out of town.

My story looks nothing like that. I wasn’t connected to Nashville at all. I was done with the place on an emotional and psychological level. Any time the idea of extra money came up, my first thought was to escape. And still I was stuck for years. Not because I didn’t want it but because every option I tried slammed shut. I applied to jobs nonstop. I tried to get relocated within my company. Nothing. It felt like I was glued to the city no matter what I did.

Then the pandemic hit. Everything was collapsing except one small thing. Suddenly remote work existed. That tiny shift was the first real opening I had ever gotten and I took it instantly. I transferred my lease, packed my stuff, and told my family and my girlfriend a week before I left. Not because I’m dramatic but because that was my only shot. If I hesitated at all, I would still be in Nashville.

I chose Texas for a few blunt reasons. It was easier to stay off my company’s radar because of the no state income tax. It was warm and not miserable half the year. And the job market didn’t make me panic. That was it. No special plan. Just logic and desperation working together for once.

And leaving was the best decision I have ever made. I found a better job. I actually got to enjoy my hobbies. I built a business and a family. None of that would have happened if I waited around for some relocation package or company transfer that was never coming.

Despite all this, I still had to take a huge risk leaving family and friends whom I had known my whole life. Last, it was just 25 year old me with enough stuff to pack in a U-Haul trailer and tow with my truck. Are people just mainly getting the corporate escort?

The % of this board that has moved out of state on their own accord is likely lower than the % of this board that has never left the state at all

Where in Texas is it not ridiculously hot for half of the year and still have plenty of amenities?

Very easy. Just find job opportunities at like companies in your industry located elsewhere, apply, interview, move. Be marketable makes it easier (engineer by trade here)

It’s not that hard. Have done it multiple times esp early in my career.

It really depends on the person. I do not depend on family or friends for much at all. I can load up and be moved fairly easy. Others lean on family and friends for child care and support.

Cool. Congrats. That must be nice. Not everyone has the same life story as you and found easier opportunities to leave.

I'm still kicking myself for not accepting a job offer that'd have had me relocating to Wyoming in 2016.

I would do it in a heartbeat but my wife refuses. I could easily transfer to Mississippi where taxes, insurance, and cost of living are significantly cheaper than Baton Rouge. The particular area of MS has great public schools meaning we’d save an extra 20k per year. But, women do not think logically.

We did it, but it wasn't easy. For us though, we were moving to be closer to a daughter that was having their 1st child. The hard part was leaving behind what little family we had left in LA.

I will say that the quality of life where we live now is so much better than where we were and we don't regret it at all. I do miss some of my family and all my friends.

All moves are hard on you stress wise but you just get through it. Two years to adjust. After five years it’s home.

Nashville is miserable half the year?

To me it sounds like you left a better place for a less desirable location, but I’m also glad others have different opinions or else nobody would live in places like Kansas or South Dakota.

Location is important to me. I passed on arguably more academic residency options because I wanted to live in a geographically better area. I ranked a smaller program in Birmingham over UMMC Jackson, South AL in Mobile, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport, and I’m not upset at all. I’d rather be in Birmingham than any of those other places, and I know I’ll be happier because of it. Didn’t get UAB unfortunately, but many of my colleagues did.

I have moved states 2x post college, solo. In both cases I found a job, found a place to live, before physically moving there. Showed up in a new city and showed up to a new office/company all within a week.

Question: when you say

…do you note the irony that you got to keep the same job and work remote? I would consider that a corporate escort out of town.

A part of my family moved to Louisiana from Tennessee in a covered wagon. We are spoiled rotten.

I’d relocate to southern California in a heartbeat if my job paid all expenses and adjusted for Col. by like 3x

Not happening.

I have zero desire to leave FL. Love it here.

My family moved from NOLA in the mid 80s right before I was born. Best decision they’ve ever made.
