If Apollo 13 had to use the moon as a slingshot in order to return…..why is this moon mission historical? Didn’t Apollo 13 see the dark side of the moon too?

The moon was in a different phase position for the Apollo missions. This was the first time they’ve ever gone behind the moon while it was illuminated.

Here's a mindblower. Every Apollo mission that landed on the moon also saw the dark side.

I believe Apollo launched with a waxing moon phase for the low light angle so they could see more features on the surface while trying to land. Apollo 13 did not see the dark side for this reason.

Well it’s mostly historical in the sense that we went back.

As for the significance of far side vs now, manned landings were timed when the side facing earth was in full daylight for the mission. They didn’t need to do that here, so more of the far side was illuminated than the manned Apollo missions.

It’s not really that historic

It’s just hyperbole to get people to tune in for ad revenue

I remember having to watch the first crewed SpaceX mission in 2020 to the ISS on the internet. But everyone's losing their shite over this one for whatever reason. Elon catches a fricking rocket with gigantic robotic chopsticks and it's crickets. But OMG NASA.

Apollo 9 was in low earth orbit and Apollo 13 was a free return trajectory.

The product placement is truly historic. It’s happy Gilmore level. I love me some Nutella, uncrustables…

There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark.

The short answer is no. They couldn't have done this safely in the 60s.

The correct term is the far side of the moon. Once we get that term down maybe we can recognize pulling off flying around in space and not dying

All Apollo missions orbited the moon. I think what makes this mission historic is their orbit took them farther out on the other side of the moon than all the Apollo missions.
