My wife and I, and two other couples, were in the Texas Hill Country - the group decided (I was the only nay vote) to do a wine tasting tour. The other two couples are real wine snobs - my wife likes wine, but couldn't care less about the grapes, etc. The places we went served only wine (and water if you insisted!) - no beer, no Scotch, no tea, no coffee, no Dr Pepper. Listening to those pretentious oenologists (well, at least I learned a new word) could drive you to drastic actions.

Thank you for allowing me to rant. Carry on.

FWI: My wife buys her wine at Costco. The other four pay big bucks for wine shipped to them.

This sounds great, I love doing the tastings in Fredericksburg, its a lot of fun. Taking the hop on hop off bus, the tastings are cheap, the wine while not Napa or anything is mostly fine, laid back atmosphere.

Costco has a good selection of good wines, wife is in the wine bidness, mostly upper end, Costco is her single biggest client

why? I don’t get the appeal of this place.

Concan area around the Frio is the best part of the Texas Hill Country, imo

Drinking alcohol in 2026 is pretty trashy regardless.

Same here - we've been to Fredericksburg several times. We enjoy the city, the museum, the surrounding area for bluebonnets, the restaurants, but they can keep their wine.

In 2026, it’s a trendy place to go. I went through there around 2017 and did some wine tastings, and the guy said that the number of applications for permits for new wineries was through the roof.

Like most things, word got out and it’s too crowded. If you want to act pretentious, go see a Texas Country performer at some crowded dance hall, take pictures in front of word art, it’s great.

The charm of the Texas Hill Country is eroding fast.

Not sure if he’s still around but we met a guy at one of the wineries who was once an investment banker that bankrolled his wine hobby through his work. He ended up retiring from his investment banking to work at wineries in the area. I always tried to find out what winery he was working at when I visited because he was such a pleasure to talk and taste wine with.

He would tell us some wild stories about people indulging too much and the shenanigans they would see. He told us they would have to kick people out almost nightly for shagging in the bathrooms and that it was more often female on female action.

Yeah Fredericksburg is a cool town but I can’t stand wine. Luckily I enjoy it for other reasons.
