CJJ said “I made some mistakes in trying to replace two guys that were irreplaceable, where we should’ve looked to replace them from guys that were already in the program, the power moving forward will come from players who start their career here.” How do you interpret this comment? I’m taking it as CJJ directly saying that he’s going to focus on building from within and not lean as heavy on the portal.

He’s hit on the portal every year he’s been here with the exception of this year and it’s brought us two national championships, why change your philosophy just because you had one awful portal year? The portal brought us Skenes, White, Eyanson, Stanfield, Gage Jump, Luke Holman. CJJ’s comments made no sense

I’d take anything he says right now with a grain of salt

Only one of those was a power hitter, which is what he seems to be referencing.

idk I think he feels pretty specific right now

but this class isn’t like others.

Tommy White and Daniel Dickinson were infinitely better prospects than anyone we took thisnyear

I prefer Jay takes team USA transfers going forward. Those seem to work out better

Think he’s more calling people out without naming them

Not sure what he'll do next season, but I don't want him to give up on the portal.

Without the portal, I'm not sure we win the CWS in '23 or '25. It brought us Skenes, Tanks, Eyenson, and Dickinson, along with Jump and Holman who deserved more offense.

Hindsight is 20/20, but when these portal players were signed, we were excited and felt they were good additions. Sure, they let us down this year and the guys they replaced have had success elsewhere. It was a bad turnout, but that doesn't mean JJ should abandon the portal. I don't think our returning position players will be enough next season.

He’s just giving a sound bite to a retarded fan base who believes LSU is the only program with elite level players and should win it every year.

I think the timing of the portal and the CWS is legit concern regarding this past years class.

I’ll be interested in how we evaluated guys like Caraway, Dardar, Simpson, York, Garcia.

It sure thing seems like we did not do very deep dives on these guys.

I think he saw that power numbers are inflated by approach. And, he wants guys who are better all around hitters "professional at bats". He won't chase power numbers anymore...but will instead attempt to take guys that can hit and develop power.

There's no chance he doesn't use the portal in a major, major way. I just expect it to be more targeted towards arms.

I think he's also referring to Larson, Costello and Ryan.

I think you try to keep your talented young guys the best you can and only take a couple of elite portal guys if possible?

Sounds like he's pissed the guys that left are having success elsewhere? I don't know, but you still have to work the portal.

I really thought Caraway was going to be good here.

Maybe he would prefer more proven portal guys.

The portal is for finishing pieces.., not wholesale rebuilds.

He took mostly guys from lower levels. That seems to translate more with pitching than hitting.

Of course, and I think he’ll be very aggressive in getting those guys this year. But he was referring to Bear Jones and Ethan Frey as the 2 guys from last year. And Crews, Dugas, Travinski, Beloso, Thompson, Jobert, Doughty, etc…from years prior. You get talented guys in their 3rd or 4th years in the program, you are in charge of developing them and you say every day what they can do.

But make no mistake, he’s not gonna quit going after the Tommy Whites, Dickinsons, Berrys, etc…I think he’s going to start investing more in freshmen that project to be power hitters in their 2nd or 3rd years in the system and build for the future. But he’s not gonna wait on them. He’ll never intentionally punt on a season. He’ll grab some proven power hitters this summer. He’s probably already tampering.

But that quote didn’t mention pitchers or other players. He’s gonna grab those every year. It wouldn’t surprise me if he comes away with the best OFer, SS, and maybe even cacher in the portal that weren’t expected to be there. And I think Doughty and Dickinson were 2 of his favorite players he’s had since he’s been here. I look for him to get a proven, gritty, 2nd baseman, too. Not sure the young guys we have now there will be able to show enough for him to feel comfortable enough for them to make the jump.

Interested to see what happens with Braun, Serna, and Bide. They’ll likely switch some of their positions around. They definitely will if there’s a stud 1B that we can get. Could move Braun back to OF.

We’ll see. But Jay’s probably gonna go super hard in the portal this year. But I believe him that he’ll also focus a little more on signing freshmen who probably won’t be staples until their 2nd or 3rd seasons.
