Meta can’t hire fiber technicians fast enough, so now they’re training them for free

My company brings H1B visa guys in every spring from Mexico to work on commercial roof projects. They supplement our payroll guys through the busy season and go back each fall.
It bothers me to know we can't get people (Americans) to work outdoors like I did in the 90s. I started off making $7 an hour. Seven years into this industry I was making six figures. Along those seven years I went from roofer to service repairman to inspector to estimator to sales to management. I had a work ethic. Many people don't want to work like I did because they're spoiled or lazy.

Some of it’s that, a lot of it is the world we live in today. The younger generation doesn’t believe in or desire to ‘work their way up’ and have a 30 year career. They want a lot fast, or live minimally enough to where they don’t desire a stable lifestyle or steady income.

Also this is their attitude. Instead of being appreciative of work and making the most of an opportunity, all they care about is what they’re going to get. When I interview someone under 35, it usually revolves around what we can do for them. Sorry, that’s not the way it works.

I used to be certified to terminate multi mode and single mode fiber with both mechanical and chemical connectors. Even worked with a fusion splicer, but that was a long time ago. We ever figure out what these jobs pay and where they are?

That, plus it only taking four weeks to train for what they need this supplemental labor for, saysnot great pay.

I know Single Mode pretty well.
If the training is only 4 weeks. I cant imagine they are paying much.
But who knows.

My uncle, vietnam vet and now retired, did some of the original fiber work with Bell South in the 1980s. This isn't new technology.
