Great Rule Change

"If the punter carries the ball outside the tackle box before he kicks the ball, then there will be no roughing the kicker or running into the kicker if he gets hit," Redding said. "So the defensive team doesn't have to decide if he is going to be a runner or not."

So would the tackler be able to smoke the kicker once he's kicked the ball?

if he kicked it from outside the tackle box, I wouldn't see where the rule would outlaw it. It pretty much makes rugby punting a whole lot riskier

It's probably similar to roughing the passer in that if the ball is gone for 2-3 secs, and you go up and drill the punter, it would be roughing the kicker. But if you hit him just after he kicked the ball, it will no longer be a penalty.

I like it, but is this for the NFL/NCAA, the "redding says" bit didn't give me enough detail

Yeah, it would probably be equivalent to a late hit on a runner who went out of bounds.

Sorry guys, been out of the house. Redding is Rogers Redding, the SEC's coordinator of football officials. It's a NCAA rule change.

every now and then, they get one right.. i cant wait to see some punters get jacked so hard that they dont have to worry about faking the injury..

this is even better than the XFL's no fair catch rule!

Canada has no fair catch and downing a kick in the endzone means the kicking team gets a point

Solid rule change, one that needed to take place...
